Consider one stage ttt of the multistage decision-dependent distributionally robust model of Yu and Shen. The stage feasible set S=Xt(xt−1,ξt)S=X_t(x_{t-1},\xi_t)S=Xt(xt−1,ξt) consists of pairs (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) with binary state x∈{0,1}Ix\in\{0,1\}^Ix∈{0,1}I, g(x,y)g(x,y)g(x,y) is the stage cost, the next-stage support is {ξ1,…,ξK}\{\xi^1,\dots,\xi^K\}{ξ1,…,ξK}, Qt+1(x,ξk)Q_{t+1}(x,\xi^k)Qt+1(x,ξk) are the next-stage values, and PD1(x)\mathcal P^{D_1}(x)PD1(x) is the Type 1 ambiguity set (3) of probability vectors with bounds p‾(x)≤p≤pˉ(x)\underline p(x)\le p\le\bar p(x)p(x)≤p≤pˉ(x) and moment bounds l(x)≤∑kpkf(ξk)≤u(x)l(x)\le\sum_kp_kf(\xi^k)\le u(x)l(x)≤∑kpkf(ξk)≤u(x).

Suppose PD1(x)\mathcal P^{D_1}(x)PD1(x) is nonempty for every feasible xxx, i.e. every xxx with (x,y)∈S(x,y)\in S(x,y)∈S for some yyy. Then, for every real qqq, the Bellman equation

Qt(xt−1,ξt)=min⁡(x,y)∈S{g(x,y)+max⁡p∈PD1(x)∑k=1KpkQt+1(x,ξk)}(2)Q_t(x_{t-1},\xi_t)=\min_{(x,y)\in S}\Big\{g(x,y)+\max_{p\in\mathcal P^{D_1}(x)}\sum_{k=1}^Kp_kQ_{t+1}(x,\xi^k)\Big\}\tag{2}Qt(xt−1,ξt)=(x,y)∈Smin{g(x,y)+p∈PD1(x)maxk=1∑KpkQt+1(x,ξk)}(2)

has (attained) optimal value qqq if and only if the joint program

min⁡α,β,γ‾,γˉ,x,y  g(x,y)−αTl(x)+βTu(x)−γ‾Tp‾(x)+γˉTpˉ(x)(4a)s.t.  (−α+β)Tf(ξk)−γ‾k+γˉk≥Qt+1(x,ξk),  ∀k∈[K],(4b)(x,y)∈S,(4c)α,β,γ‾,γˉ≥0(4d)\begin{aligned}\min_{\alpha,\beta,\underline\gamma,\bar\gamma,x,y}\ \ & g(x,y)-\alpha^{\mathsf T}l(x)+\beta^{\mathsf T}u(x)-\underline\gamma^{\mathsf T}\underline p(x)+\bar\gamma^{\mathsf T}\bar p(x) &(4a)\\ \text{s.t.}\ \ &(-\alpha+\beta)^{\mathsf T}f(\xi^k)-\underline\gamma_k+\bar\gamma_k\ge Q_{t+1}(x,\xi^k),\ \ \forall k\in[K], &(4b)\\ &(x,y)\in S, &(4c)\\ &\alpha,\beta,\underline\gamma,\bar\gamma\ge0 &(4d)\end{aligned}α,β,γ,γˉ,x,ymin  s.t.  g(x,y)−αTl(x)+βTu(x)−γTp(x)+γˉTpˉ(x)(−α+β)Tf(ξk)−γk+γˉk≥Qt+1(x,ξk),  ∀k∈[K],(x,y)∈S,α,β,γ,γˉ≥0(4a)(4b)(4c)(4d)

has (attained) optimal value qqq.

The theorem replaces the min–max Bellman equation by a single minimization, which the paper then linearizes with McCormick envelopes and solves by SDDiP.

Formalization Note "Min" and "max" are encoded as IsLeast / IsGreatest of the value sets, so both include attainment, and the theorem is the equivalence of the two optimal values for every qqq. The ambiguity set includes p≥0p\ge0p≥0 (the proof's (C-17f), and Assumption 3), which (3) as printed omits; without it the dual constraint (4b) would have to be an equality. The theorem is stated for an arbitrary set SSS and an arbitrary cost ggg: the page's linearity of ggg and the compactness and polyhedrality of SSS are dropped (a disclosed generalisation; the proof does not use them), while the binary state is kept as a hypothesis. Qt+1Q_{t+1}Qt+1 is an arbitrary real function of (x,k)(x,k)(x,k).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
