Consider the rounding mechanism for bounded scheduling with times in [a,b][a,b][a,b], 0<a<b0 < a < b0<a<b, a fixed ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0, a rounding step 0<δ≤εa0 < \delta \le \varepsilon a0<δ≤εa, and an allocation algorithm x(⋅)x(\cdot)x(⋅) that exactly solves the rounded problem (ties arbitrary). Let t∈[a,b]n×kt \in [a,b]^{n\times k}t∈[a,b]n×k be the agents' true types. Suppose every agent lll declares dl∈[a,b]kd^l \in [a,b]^kdl∈[a,b]k with d^l=t^l\hat d^l = \hat t^ld^l=t^l and uses a feasible execution plan whose rounded actual times equal the rounded true times on its own tasks, for every decision. Let x=x(d)x = x(d)x=x(d) and let t~\tilde tt~ be the resulting actual times. Then

g(x,t~)=max⁡l∑j∈xlt~j  ≤  (1+ε) g(y,t)for every allocation y.g(x,\tilde t) = \max_l \sum_{j \in x^l} \tilde t_j \;\le\; (1+\varepsilon)\, g(y,t)\quad\text{for every allocation } y.g(x,t~)=lmaxj∈xl∑t~j≤(1+ε)g(y,t)for every allocation y.

The make-span is measured with the actual execution times, the objective of the problem with verification (Definition 20).

Formalization Note The statement holds for every δ∈(0,εa]\delta \in (0,\varepsilon a]δ∈(0,εa], which covers the intended choice δ=εa\delta = \varepsilon aδ=εa. The hypothesis on executions is imposed for every decision, as in the paper's description of the strategies; the upper bound bbb is not used.

/-- Proof of Theorem 5.9, third sentence (p. 193): when every agent follows a strategy of the
class `RoundsLikeTruth` (declaration in `[a, b]ᵏ` with the same rounded value as its true type,
feasible executions whose rounded times equal the rounded true times), the outcome of the rounding
mechanism is a `(1 + ε)`-approximation: its make-span, measured with the actual execution times,
is at most `1 + ε` times the make-span of every allocation under the true types. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
