Theorem 3.5 — Algorithm GIN converges to a limit point near which ∥sk∥≤Γ(1−ηk)∥F(xk)∥\|s_k\|\le\Gamma(1-\eta_k)\|F(x_k)\|∥sk∥≤Γ(1−ηk)∥F(xk)∥

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real normed space and F:E→EF:E\to EF:E→E continuously differentiable. Assume that Algorithm GIN with parameter t∈(0,1)t\in(0,1)t∈(0,1) does not break down, with iterates xkx_kxk, levels ηk\eta_kηk and steps sk=xk+1−xks_k=x_{k+1}-x_ksk=xk+1−xk. Let x∗x_*x∗ be a limit point of (xk)(x_k)(xk) for which there is a constant Γ\GammaΓ, independent of kkk, with

∥sk∥≤Γ(1−ηk) ∥F(xk)∥(3.2)\|s_k\|\le\Gamma(1-\eta_k)\,\|F(x_k)\| \tag{3.2}∥sk∥≤Γ(1−ηk)∥F(xk)∥(3.2)

whenever xkx_kxk is sufficiently near x∗x_*x∗ and kkk is sufficiently large. Then xk→x∗x_k\to x_*xk→x∗.

No invertibility of F′(x∗)F'(x_*)F′(x∗) is assumed, and the theorem does not claim F(x∗)=0F(x_*)=0F(x∗)=0. It complements Theorem 3.3 and gives the convergence part of Theorem 5.2.

Formalization Note The paper says "sufficiently near" and "sufficiently large"; we state: there exist Γ∈R\Gamma\in\mathbb RΓ∈R, δ>0\delta>0δ>0 and KKK such that (3.2) holds for every k≥Kk\ge Kk≥K with ∥xk−x∗∥<δ\|x_k-x_*\|<\delta∥xk−x∗∥<δ. Γ\GammaΓ is chosen before kkk ("independent of kkk").

/-- Eisenstat–Walker (1994), p. 401, Theorem 3.5: assume Algorithm GIN does not break down. If
`x_*` is a limit point of `{x_k}` such that there is a `Γ` independent of `k` for which (3.2)
`‖s_k‖ ≤ Γ (1 - η_k) ‖F(x_k)‖` whenever `x_k` is sufficiently near `x_*` and `k` is sufficiently
large, then `x_k → x_*`. "Sufficiently near / large" is `∃ δ > 0, ∃ K`, after `∃ Γ`. No invertibility
of `F'(x_*)` is assumed. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
