Let Ω\OmegaΩ be a nonempty closed convex subset of a finite-dimensional real inner product space EEE and let PPP be the projection into Ω\OmegaΩ. If z∈Ωz \in \Omegaz∈Ω, then

⟨P(x)−x, z−P(x)⟩≥0for all x∈E.\langle P(x) - x,\ z - P(x) \rangle \ge 0 \qquad \text{for all } x \in E.⟨P(x)−x, z−P(x)⟩≥0for all x∈E.

Geometrically, the vector from xxx to its projection makes a non-obtuse angle with every direction from P(x)P(x)P(x) into Ω\OmegaΩ. This inequality is the source of the descent estimates (2.4)–(2.5) of the gradient projection method, and it characterises the fixed points of x↦P(x−α∇f(x))x \mapsto P(x - \alpha\nabla f(x))x↦P(x−α∇f(x)) as the stationary points.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
