Let AAA be a self-adjoint operator in a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak HH and let PAP_APA be its projection-valued measure (A=∫Rλ dPA(λ)A = \int_{\mathbb{R}} \lambda\, dP_A(\lambda)A=∫RλdPA(λ)). Then

PA(σ(A))=IandPA(R∩ρ(A))=0(3.54).P_A(\sigma(A)) = \mathbb{I} \qquad\text{and}\qquad P_A(\mathbb{R} \cap \rho(A)) = 0 \qquad (3.54).PA(σ(A))=IandPA(R∩ρ(A))=0(3.54).

Consequently PA(f)=PA(χσ(A)f)P_A(f) = P_A(\chi_{\sigma(A)} f)PA(f)=PA(χσ(A)f): functions of AAA only depend on the values of fff on the spectrum.

Formalization Note. As in Theorem 3.8, PAP_APA is a projection-valued measure P with A = spectralIntegral P (fun x => x). The sets σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) and R∩ρ(A)\mathbb{R} \cap \rho(A)R∩ρ(A) are subsets of C\mathbb{C}C; they enter as the real sets {x∈R∣x∈σ(A)}\{x \in \mathbb{R} \mid x \in \sigma(A)\}{x∈R∣x∈σ(A)} and {x∈R∣x∈ρ(A)}\{x \in \mathbb{R} \mid x \in \rho(A)\}{x∈R∣x∈ρ(A)} (both Borel, since σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) is closed).

Setting.

  • HHH is a complex Hilbert space, possibly {0}\{0\}{0}.
  • AAA is a partially defined linear operator on HHH that is self-adjoint in Mathlib's sense: A∗=AA^* = AA∗=A as partially defined operators.
  • PPP maps every subset of R\mathbb{R}R to a bounded operator on HHH and satisfies the imported predicate IsProjValuedMeasure, whose content is not shown.
  • It is assumed that AAA equals the imported spectralIntegral P of the function x↦xx \mapsto xx↦x viewed as complex-valued.
  • σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) and ρ(A)\rho(A)ρ(A) denote the imported spectrum A and resolventSet A, subsets of C\mathbb{C}C.

Conclusion. The theorem asserts both of the following:

P({x∈R:x∈σ(A)})=IandP({x∈R:x∈ρ(A)})=0,P\big(\{x \in \mathbb{R} : x \in \sigma(A)\}\big) = I \qquad\text{and}\qquad P\big(\{x \in \mathbb{R} : x \in \rho(A)\}\big) = 0,P({x∈R:x∈σ(A)})=IandP({x∈R:x∈ρ(A)})=0,

where III is the identity operator on HHH. The sets are the real points of σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) and of ρ(A)\rho(A)ρ(A) respectively. The statement does not itself assert that these sets are Borel.

Degenerate cases.

  • If H={0}H = \{0\}H={0}, then I=0I = 0I=0 and both equalities hold trivially.
  • If the hypotheses (self-adjointness, the representation of AAA, and IsProjValuedMeasure P) cannot hold simultaneously, the theorem is vacuous; the content of the imported predicate is not shown here.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
