For a finite index set ι\iotaι and a family of complex numbers d=(di)i∈ιd=(d_i)_{i\in\iota}d=(di)i∈ι, diagonalOperator defines the C\mathbb{C}C-linear operator on the finite-dimensional Hilbert space Cι\mathbb{C}^\iotaCι (EuclideanSpace ℂ ι) that acts diagonally by ddd:

diagonalOperator(d) x=(di xi)i∈ι.\mathrm{diagonalOperator}(d)\,x = (d_i\,x_i)_{i\in\iota}.diagonalOperator(d)x=(dixi)i∈ι.

It exists to connect the coordinate-vector form of the Hlawka-type inequality (stated for lpNorm) to the operator-theoretic Schatten ppp-quantity schattenPNorm: the coordinate basis is an eigenbasis of the associated Gram operator, with eigenvalues ∣di∣2|d_i|^2∣di∣2, so the singular values of diagonalOperator(d)\mathrm{diagonalOperator}(d)diagonalOperator(d) are exactly ∣di∣|d_i|∣di∣, and — for p>0p>0p>0 — its Schatten ppp-quantity agrees with ∥d∥p\|d\|_p∥d∥p (lpNorm). This is the bridge that lets a result proved by the coordinate argument be read as a genuine statement about singular values.

# Diagonal operators and coordinate power sums

This connects the coordinate proof to the singular-value Schatten norm
used in the publication boundary. The Gram operator has the coordinate
basis as an eigenbasis, with eigenvalues equal to squared entry norms.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
