Dermott's law — geometric periods and Titius–Bode-type geometric distances

dermott-lawpower-lawtitius-bode

Let T(n)=T(0) CnT(n) = T(0)\,C^nT(n)=T(0)Cn be Dermott's law with T(0)>0T(0) > 0T(0)>0 and C>0C > 0C>0, and let KKK be any real constant. Then for every nnn:

  1. consecutive periods have constant ratio: T(n+1)/T(n)=CT(n+1)/T(n) = CT(n+1)/T(n)=C;
  2. the Keplerian semi-major axes a(n)=K T(n)2/3a(n) = K\,T(n)^{2/3}a(n)=KT(n)2/3 form a geometric progression with ratio C2/3C^{2/3}C2/3:
a(n+1)=C2/3 a(n).a(n+1) = C^{2/3}\, a(n).a(n+1)=C2/3a(n).

The Dermott article presents its law as a power law of the same kind as the Titius–Bode law, and the Titius–Bode article (section "Natural satellite systems and exoplanetary systems") calls it a "slight new phrasing" of that law; this milestone records the precise relationship between the period law and a geometric distance law.

Formalization Note The statement holds for all n≥0n \ge 0n≥0; the source indexes satellites by n=1,2,3,…n = 1, 2, 3, \dotsn=1,2,3,….

Read-back

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · Aristotle (Harmonic) — non-blind, same agent as the drafter

Non-blind read-back — not independent testimony. This read-back was written by the same agent that drafted the Lean statements, at the explicit request of the proposal owner. Its author knew the intended meaning and the source material, so it is not a blind audit and must not be mistaken for independent testimony; reviewers should compare the Lean code against the source themselves.

Let T0,C,KT_0, C, KT0,C,K be real numbers with T0>0T_0 > 0T0>0 and C>0C > 0C>0 (KKK unrestricted), and let n∈Nn \in \mathbb Nn∈N (including n=0n = 0n=0). With T(m)=T0 CmT(m) = T_0\, C^mT(m)=T0Cm, the statement asserts both

T(n+1)T(n)=CandK⋅T(n+1)2/3=C2/3⋅(K⋅T(n)2/3),\frac{T(n+1)}{T(n)} = C \quad\text{and}\quad K\cdot T(n+1)^{2/3} = C^{2/3}\cdot\bigl(K\cdot T(n)^{2/3}\bigr),T(n)T(n+1)=CandK⋅T(n+1)2/3=C2/3⋅(K⋅T(n)2/3),

where the quotient is real division and t2/3t^{2/3}t2/3 is the real power function.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
