This is a finite-dimensional whitening existence theorem.

Let VVV be a finite-dimensional real inner-product normed space and let T:V→VT:V\to VT:V→V be continuous linear. Assume:

  1. TTT is symmetric;
  2. ⟨Tv,v⟩>0\langle Tv,v\rangle>0⟨Tv,v⟩>0 for every nonzero v∈Vv\in Vv∈V.

Then there exists a continuous linear equivalence W:V≃VW:V\simeq VW:V≃V such that WWW is self-adjoint and

⟨T(Wu),Wv⟩=⟨u,v⟩for all u,v∈V.\langle T(Wu),Wv\rangle=\langle u,v\rangle\qquad\text{for all }u,v\in V.⟨T(Wu),Wv⟩=⟨u,v⟩for all u,v∈V.

Only existence of a self-adjoint whitening equivalence is asserted; positivity or uniqueness of WWW is not part of the conclusion.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
