Let S⊆RdS\subseteq\mathbb R^dS⊆Rd be nonempty, compact, and convex, and let w∗w^*w∗ select an optimal decision for each cost vector. For a realized cost ccc and prediction c^\hat cc^, the vector 2(w∗(c)−w∗(2c^−c))2(w^*(c)-w^*(2\hat c-c))2(w∗(c)−w∗(2c^−c)) is a subgradient of the SPO+ loss in its prediction argument. Explicitly, for every c~∈Rd\tilde c\in\mathbb R^dc~∈Rd,

ℓSPO+(c~,c)≥ℓSPO+(c^,c)+⟨2(w∗(c)−w∗(2c^−c)),c~−c^⟩.\ell_{\mathrm{SPO+}}(\tilde c,c)\ge\ell_{\mathrm{SPO+}}(\hat c,c)+\left\langle2\bigl(w^*(c)-w^*(2\hat c-c)\bigr),\tilde c-\hat c\right\rangle.ℓSPO+(c~,c)≥ℓSPO+(c^,c)+⟨2(w∗(c)−w∗(2c^−c)),c~−c^⟩.

This supplies a concrete subgradient even when the support function is not differentiable.

Formalization Note The inequality uses the paper's definition of subgradient on p. 10. It retains the factor 222 and the reflected argument 2c^−c2\hat c-c2c^−c.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
