A tree witness is a function θ(k,r)∈{0,1}\theta(k,r)\in\{0,1\}θ(k,r)∈{0,1} on the nodes (k,r)(k,r)(k,r), 0≤r<2k0\le r<2^k0≤r<2k, of the binary tree of residues. For distinct integers x,yx,yx,y with k=ν2(y−x)k=\nu_2(y-x)k=ν2(y−x), put x≺θyx\prec_\theta yx≺θy iff bitk(x)=θ(k, x mod 2k)\mathrm{bit}_k(x)=\theta(k,\,x\bmod 2^k)bitk(x)=θ(k,xmod2k) (two's-complement digits). A finite word QQQ of integers is θ\thetaθ-safe if the sequence "the letters of QQQ in order, then all remaining integers in ≺θ\prec_\theta≺θ-order" contains no monotone 444-term arithmetic progression; it is tree-safe if it is θ\thetaθ-safe for some θ\thetaθ. Let PPP be θ\thetaθ-safe, a≠ba\neq ba=b, r=b−ar=b-ar=b−a, k=ν2(r)k=\nu_2(r)k=ν2(r) and xi=a+(2i−1)rx_i=a+(2^i-1)rxi=a+(2i−1)r (so x0=ax_0=ax0=a, x1=bx_1=bx1=b, xi+2=3xi+1−2xix_{i+2}=3x_{i+1}-2x_ixi+2=3xi+1−2xi). Put Qn=P⋅(x2,…,xn+1)Q_n=P\cdot(x_2,\dots,x_{n+1})Qn=P⋅(x2,…,xn+1). Assume b∈Pb\in Pb∈P is the θ\thetaθ-minimum of PPP, bbb is alone in its class mod 2k+12^{k+1}2k+1 among the letters of PPP, and for every nnn the number xn+2x_{n+2}xn+2 is not 2v−u2v-u2v−u for any uuu occurring before vvv in QnQ_nQn. Then for every n≥0n\ge0n≥0 there is a tree witness θn\theta_nθn such that

Qn is θn-safe,xn+1 is the θn-minimum of Qn,xn+1 is alone in its class mod 2k+n+1.Q_n\ \text{is}\ \theta_n\text{-safe},\quad x_{n+1}\ \text{is the}\ \theta_n\text{-minimum of}\ Q_n,\quad x_{n+1}\ \text{is alone in its class mod}\ 2^{k+n+1}.Qn is θn-safe,xn+1 is the θn-minimum of Qn,xn+1 is alone in its class mod 2k+n+1.

So the isolated-minimum completion can be iterated indefinitely along the doubling sequence (Erdős Problem 195).

Formalization note: treeLt θ is from Definitions.Def_Erdos195_tree; Safe, bitOne are from Definitions.Def_Erdos195_defs. Positions in a word are List.idxOf; P ++ [c] appends c.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
