Let K/QK/\mathbb{Q}K/Q be a finite Galois extension with group GGG, ppp a prime, and rrr the unit rank of KKK. Let ε∈OK×\varepsilon\in\mathcal{O}_K^\timesε∈OK× be a Minkowski unit: its conjugates {σε}σ∈G\{\sigma\varepsilon\}_{\sigma\in G}{σε}σ∈G generate a subgroup of finite index in OK×\mathcal{O}_K^\timesOK× (such units exist by NumberField.Units.exists_minkowskiUnit). Assume every conjugate lies in the logarithm ball at every prime v∣pv\mid pv∣p:

∥ιv(σε)−1∥v≤∥p∥v2(σ∈G, v∣p).\|\iota_v(\sigma\varepsilon)-1\|_v\le \|p\|_v^{2}\qquad(\sigma\in G,\ v\mid p).∥ιv(σε)−1∥v≤∥p∥v2(σ∈G, v∣p).

Write Λ(x)=(log⁡pιv(x))v∣p∈∏v∣pKv\Lambda(x)=(\log_p\iota_v(x))_{v\mid p}\in\prod_{v\mid p}K_vΛ(x)=(logpιv(x))v∣p∈∏v∣pKv. Then Leopoldt's conjecture holds for (K,p)(K,p)(K,p) if and only if one can pick rrr automorphisms σ1,…,σr∈G\sigma_1,\dots,\sigma_r\in Gσ1,…,σr∈G such that

Λ(σ1ε), …, Λ(σrε)\Lambda(\sigma_1\varepsilon),\ \dots,\ \Lambda(\sigma_r\varepsilon)Λ(σ1ε), …, Λ(σrε)

are linearly independent over Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp.

Since the ∣G∣=r1+2r2|G|=r_1+2r_2∣G∣=r1+2r2 conjugates of ε\varepsilonε satisfy at least one relation (their product is the norm ±1\pm1±1), one can at most hope for rrr independent ones; the theorem says Leopoldt's conjecture is exactly the statement that the ppp-adic logarithms of the conjugates of a Minkowski unit have the maximal possible Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-rank rrr. This is the starting point of Ax's and Brumer's treatment of the abelian case, where the Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-rank is then computed via the group determinant of GGG. The Galois action here is σε\sigma\varepsilonσε = image of ε\varepsilonε under the ring automorphism of OK\mathcal{O}_KOK induced by σ\sigmaσ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
