Let ppp be a prime and let L/KL/KL/K be a Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-extension, i.e. a Galois extension whose Galois group Γ=Gal(L/K)\Gamma=\mathrm{Gal}(L/K)Γ=Gal(L/K) is topologically isomorphic to Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp. Then the intermediate fields of L/KL/KL/K of finite degree over KKK form a single tower

K=K0⊂K1⊂K2⊂⋯⊂L,[Kn:K]=pn,K = K_0 \subset K_1 \subset K_2 \subset \cdots \subset L, \qquad [K_n : K] = p^n,K=K0⊂K1⊂K2⊂⋯⊂L,[Kn:K]=pn,

more precisely:

  1. for every n≥0n \ge 0n≥0 there is exactly one intermediate field K⊆Kn⊆LK \subseteq K_n \subseteq LK⊆Kn⊆L with [Kn:K]=pn[K_n:K]=p^n[Kn:K]=pn;
  2. every intermediate field K⊆M⊆LK\subseteq M\subseteq LK⊆M⊆L with [M:K]<∞[M:K]<\infty[M:K]<∞ is Galois over KKK, has cyclic Galois group Gal(M/K)\mathrm{Gal}(M/K)Gal(M/K), and satisfies [M:K]=pn[M:K]=p^n[M:K]=pn for some n≥0n\ge 0n≥0 (hence M=KnM = K_nM=Kn and Gal(Kn/K)≅Z/pnZ\mathrm{Gal}(K_n/K)\cong\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}Gal(Kn/K)≅Z/pnZ).

This is the basic structure theorem for the layers of a Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-extension: the finite layers KnK_nKn are the fixed fields of the closed subgroups Γpn≅pnZp\Gamma^{p^n}\cong p^n\mathbb{Z}_pΓpn≅pnZp, and they are the fields to which Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula ∣An∣=pμpn+λn+ν|A_n| = p^{\mu p^n+\lambda n+\nu}∣An∣=pμpn+λn+ν applies.

Formalization Note [M:K][M:K][M:K] is Module.finrank K M, which is 000 for infinite-dimensional MMM; so statement 1 quantifies over all intermediate fields. IsZpExtension p K L is the platform definition Def_ZpExtension (L/KL/KL/K Galois and Gal(L/K)≅Zp\mathrm{Gal}(L/K)\cong \mathbb{Z}_pGal(L/K)≅Zp as topological groups, Krull topology).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
