The modulus of a logarithm, in transcendence degree one.

Let λ\lambdaλ be a non-real logarithm of an algebraic number, and suppose that λˉ\bar\lambdaλˉ is algebraic over Q[λ]\mathbb{Q}[\lambda]Q[λ]. Since λ\lambdaλ is transcendental, this is the same as saying that λ\lambdaλ and λˉ\bar\lambdaλˉ are algebraically dependent. Then

e∣λ∣e^{|\lambda|}e∣λ∣

is transcendental.

This is the homogeneous companion of Diaz's modulus conjecture. The conjecture asks that ∣λ∣|\lambda|∣λ∣ never be algebraic; this node says that ∣λ∣|\lambda|∣λ∣ is not a logarithm of an algebraic number, whenever λ\lambdaλ and λˉ\bar\lambdaλˉ generate a field of transcendence degree one. At λ=iπ\lambda = i\piλ=iπ it gives the transcendence of eπe^{\pi}eπ. The case λ=log⁡2+iπ\lambda = \log 2 + i\piλ=log2+iπ is DiazModulus.exp_abs_log_two_add_i_pi_transcendental.

Proof. The matrix (∣λ∣λˉλ∣λ∣)\begin{pmatrix} |\lambda| & \bar\lambda \\ \lambda & |\lambda| \end{pmatrix}(∣λ∣λλˉ∣λ∣) has determinant ∣λ∣2−λλˉ=0|\lambda|^{2} - \lambda\bar\lambda = 0∣λ∣2−λλˉ=0. If e∣λ∣e^{|\lambda|}e∣λ∣ were algebraic, its entries would be non-zero logarithms of algebraic numbers, all algebraic over Q[λ]\mathbb{Q}[\lambda]Q[λ], so by DiazModulus.four_exponentials_trdeg_one its rows or its columns would be Q\mathbb{Q}Q-linearly dependent. Either way λ\lambdaλ would be a rational multiple of the real number ∣λ∣|\lambda|∣λ∣, against Im⁡λ≠0\operatorname{Im}\lambda \neq 0Imλ=0.

Attribution. Known: Proposition 2 of G. Diaz, J. Théor. Nombres Bordeaux 9 (1997), and Corollaire 7.4 of D. Roy and M. Waldschmidt, Ann. Sci. École Norm. Sup. (4) 30 (1997), found independently the same year; see also Exercise 15.16(c) of Waldschmidt's Diophantine Approximation on Linear Algebraic Groups (2000). The node Diaz.log_modulus_forces_independence states it with the four exponentials theorem as an explicit hypothesis; this node is unconditional. The contribution of this node is the formal proof.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
