Let R[x,y]\mathbb R[x,y]R[x,y] and C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y] be the real and complex polynomial rings in two variables. The real plane is C\mathbb CC, with z=x+iyz=x+iyz=x+iy, and C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y] is read in the coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ, so that Z(P)={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}Z(P)=\{z\in\mathbb C : P(z,\bar z)=0\}Z(P)={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0} is the real locus of PPP. Write Isom(C)\mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb C)Isom(C) for the group of all distance-preserving bijections of C\mathbb CC. Throughout, m,d∈Nm,d\in\mathbb Nm,d∈N and α,a,b,c∈C\alpha,a,b,c\in\mathbb Cα,a,b,c∈C.

For a real polynomial f∈R[x,y]f\in\mathbb R[x,y]f∈R[x,y] and a set S⊆CS\subseteq\mathbb CS⊆C, the file defines the zero set of fff in the plane and the symmetry group of SSS:

Cf={z∈C:f(Re⁡z,Im⁡z)=0},Sym(S)={T∈Isom(C):T(z)∈S  ⟺  z∈S for all z∈C}.C_f=\{z\in\mathbb C : f(\operatorname{Re}z,\operatorname{Im}z)=0\},\qquad \mathrm{Sym}(S)=\{T\in\mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb C) : T(z)\in S\iff z\in S\ \text{for all}\ z\in\mathbb C\}.Cf={z∈C:f(Rez,Imz)=0},Sym(S)={T∈Isom(C):T(z)∈S⟺z∈S for all z∈C}.

It also defines:

  1. Geometric irreducibility of fff, meaning that fff is irreducible in C[x,y]\mathbb C[x,y]C[x,y]; and the direct symmetry pairs of CfC_fCf, the (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) with ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1 and az+b∈Cf  ⟺  z∈Cfaz+b\in C_f\iff z\in C_faz+b∈Cf⟺z∈Cf for all zzz.
  2. The passage to the coordinates of the note, as substitutions in the polynomial ring in two variables: f(x,y)↦f(X+Y2,X−Y2i)f(x,y)\mapsto f\big(\tfrac{X+Y}{2},\tfrac{X-Y}{2i}\big)f(x,y)↦f(2X+Y,2iX−Y) and its inverse P(X,Y)↦P(x+iy, x−iy)P(X,Y)\mapsto P(x+iy,\,x-iy)P(X,Y)↦P(x+iy,x−iy); the complexification of a real fff, which is its image under the former once its coefficients are viewed in C\mathbb CC; and the real polynomial formed by the real parts of the coefficients of a complex one.
  3. The group Sym(Z(P))\mathrm{Sym}(Z(P))Sym(Z(P)); the isometries z↦az+bz\mapsto az+bz↦az+b and z↦azˉ+bz\mapsto a\bar z+bz↦azˉ+b for ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1; and the map sending a direct or opposite symmetry pair (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) of Z(P)Z(P)Z(P) to the corresponding element of Sym(Z(P))\mathrm{Sym}(Z(P))Sym(Z(P)).
  4. The extremal polynomial of equation (6), Pα=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY), for which Pα(z,zˉ)=2Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+α))P_\alpha(z,\bar z)=2\operatorname{Re}\big(z^m(|z|^2+\alpha)\big)Pα(z,zˉ)=2Re(zm(∣z∣2+α)), and the two-parameter polynomial Xm(a+bXY)+Ym(aˉ+bˉXY)X^m(a+bXY)+Y^m(\bar a+\bar bXY)Xm(a+bXY)+Ym(aˉ+bˉXY), the radial form (5) with A(s)=a+bsA(s)=a+bsA(s)=a+bs.
  5. The Fermat polynomial Xd+Yd−2X^d+Y^d-2Xd+Yd−2, also written as an element of C[Y][X]\mathbb C[Y][X]C[Y][X].
  6. The dilation pullback P(X,Y)↦P(cX,cˉY)P(X,Y)\mapsto P(cX,\bar cY)P(X,Y)↦P(cX,cˉY) along z↦czz\mapsto czz↦cz, and the blow-up substitution P(X,Y)↦P(tY,Y)P(X,Y)\mapsto P(tY,Y)P(X,Y)↦P(tY,Y), whose target coordinates are (Y,t)(Y,t)(Y,t).

Theorem 1 is formalized for a real polynomial fff: its curve CCC is CfC_fCf, irreducibility over C\mathbb CC is geometric irreducibility, and Sym(C)\mathrm{Sym}(C)Sym(C) is the group of all isometries of the plane preserving CfC_fCf; the substitution f↦Pf\mapsto Pf↦P is the passage to the polynomial PPP that precedes equation (4). PαP_\alphaPα is the complexification (6) of the curves Cm,αC_{m,\alpha}Cm,α of Theorems 1 and 2 and Lemma 4. Xd+Yd−2X^d+Y^d-2Xd+Yd−2 is the complexification of 2(Re⁡(zd)−1)2(\operatorname{Re}(z^d)-1)2(Re(zd)−1), that is, of the sharpness examples Re⁡(zd)=1\operatorname{Re}(z^d)=1Re(zd)=1 of Theorem 1 and of the degree-four curve of Remark 5. The two-parameter polynomial and the dilation pullback express the radial form (5) and the normalization z=reiϕwz=re^{i\phi}wz=reiϕw in the equality case of Theorem 1, and dilations also enter the coefficient comparison (8) in the proof of Theorem 2. The blow-up substitution is the chart X=tYX=tYX=tY of the proof of Lemma 4.

Formalization Note: Isometries are elements of ℂ ≃ᵢ ℂ, with no affine form assumed, and real polynomials are MvPolynomial (Fin 2) ℝ. The file also proves the facts later parts use: if PPP is not a unit, is not divisible by YYY, and P(tY,Y)=YmHP(tY,Y)=Y^mHP(tY,Y)=YmH with HHH irreducible, then PPP is irreducible; PαP_\alphaPα has total degree m+2m+2m+2 for m≥1m\ge1m≥1 and is irreducible when moreover α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ; and Xd+Yd−2X^d+Y^d-2Xd+Yd−2 is irreducible for d≥1d\ge1d≥1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
