This is a step of the proof of Theorem 1 of Sands, Sauer and Woodrow (On monochromatic paths in edge-coloured digraphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 33 (1982), 271–275, pp. 271–273), in the form given by Chancelier (arXiv:2604.21376, Definition 8 and Lemma 9).

Let RRR be a relation on a set VVV, and let it induce an order on subsets of VVV by

S⪯RT  ⟺  ∀x∈S, ∃y∈T, x=y ∨ x R y.S \preceq_R T \iff \forall x \in S,\ \exists y \in T,\ x = y \ \vee\ x\,R\,y .S⪯RT⟺∀x∈S, ∃y∈T, x=y ∨ xRy.

If RRR is transitive, then so is ⪯R\preceq_R⪯R: from S⪯RTS \preceq_R TS⪯RT and T⪯RUT \preceq_R UT⪯RU follows S⪯RUS \preceq_R US⪯RU.

The order on sets is the one the maximality argument of the source theorem takes a maximal element of, so its order-theoretic laws are what make that argument available.

Formalization Note. ⪯R\preceq_R⪯R is equation (4) of the mechanized reference; transitivity is one of the two laws that make it a partial order on independent sets there.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
