Let XXX be an n×kn \times kn×k complex matrix and W=XX∗W = XX^*W=XX∗. If λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_nλ1,…,λn are the eigenvalues of WWW and λ~1,…,λ~n\tilde\lambda_1, \dots, \tilde\lambda_nλ~1,…,λ~n those of ρ=W/Tr⁡W\rho = W/\operatorname{Tr} Wρ=W/TrW, then (as lists counted with multiplicity)

λ~i=λi∑j=1nλj,1≤i≤n.\tilde\lambda_i = \frac{\lambda_i}{\sum_{j=1}^n \lambda_j}, \qquad 1 \le i \le n .λ~i=∑j=1nλjλi,1≤i≤n.

This is how the spectrum of a density matrix of law μn,k\mu_{n,k}μn,k is read off the spectrum of a Wishart matrix; it is used in eq. (51) of the proof of Theorem 5.

Formalization Note The page states it for a Wishart random matrix; since every realization of a Wishart matrix is of the form XX∗XX^*XX∗, it is stated for every deterministic XXX. Eigenvalues are multisets (with multiplicity). At X=0X = 0X=0 both sides are nnn zeros in Lean (0⁻¹ = 0, 0 / 0 = 0), so no hypothesis is needed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
