Let (S,C,U,H,Jˉ)(S,C,U,H,\bar J)(S,C,U,H,Jˉ) be a monotone model satisfying Assumptions I, I.1 and I.2.

  1. A stationary policy π∗={μ∗,μ∗,… }\pi^*=\{\mu^*,\mu^*,\dots\}π∗={μ∗,μ∗,…} is optimal, i.e. Jμ∗=J∗J_{\mu^*}=J^*Jμ∗=J∗, if and only if
Tμ∗(J∗)=T(J∗).T_{\mu^*}(J^*)=T(J^*).Tμ∗(J∗)=T(J∗).
  1. If there exists an optimal policy π∈Π\pi\in\Piπ∈Π (i.e. Jπ=J∗J_\pi=J^*Jπ=J∗), then there exists an optimal stationary policy.

Part 1 says that a stationary policy is optimal exactly when it attains the infimum in Bellman's equation at every state. It is what turns the attainment statements of Propositions 11 and 12 into the existence of an optimal stationary policy.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
