This is the second direction of the passage between Schur colourings and covers by sumfree sets.

Let n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 and NNN be natural numbers. A set S⊆NS \subseteq \mathbb{N}S⊆N is sumfree if x+y∉Sx + y \notin Sx+y∈/S for all x,y∈Sx, y \in Sx,y∈S, the case x=yx = yx=y included. Suppose that [1,N][1, N][1,N] is covered by nnn sumfree sets, that is, [1,N]⊆C0∪⋯∪Cn−1[1, N] \subseteq C_0 \cup \dots \cup C_{n-1}[1,N]⊆C0∪⋯∪Cn−1 for some sumfree sets C0,…,Cn−1⊆NC_0, \dots, C_{n-1} \subseteq \mathbb{N}C0,…,Cn−1⊆N. Then there is a colouring with nnn colours that is a Schur colouring of [1,N][1, N][1,N]:

∃ c:N→Fin n  such that there are no x,y≥1 with x+y≤N and c(x)=c(y)=c(x+y).\exists\, c : \mathbb{N} \to \mathrm{Fin}\,n \ \text{ such that there are no } x, y \ge 1 \text{ with } x + y \le N \text{ and } c(x) = c(y) = c(x + y).∃c:N→Finn  such that there are no x,y≥1 with x+y≤N and c(x)=c(y)=c(x+y).

With ClassicalSchur.coveredBySumFree_of_schurColoring, for n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 a Schur colouring of [1,N][1, N][1,N] with nnn colours gives a cover of [1,N][1, N][1,N] by nnn sumfree sets, and such a cover gives a Schur colouring. So the Schur number S(n)S(n)S(n), the largest NNN for which [1,N][1, N][1,N] has a Schur colouring with nnn colours, is also the largest NNN for which [1,N][1, N][1,N] is covered by nnn sumfree sets.

Formalization Note. The hypothesis is CoveredBySumFree (Set.Icc 1 N) n: the nnn sets are indexed by Fin n, need not be disjoint and need not lie in [1,N][1, N][1,N]. The hypothesis n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 cannot be dropped: for n=0n = 0n=0 and N=0N = 0N=0 the empty interval is covered by no sets, but there is no function N→Fin 0\mathbb{N} \to \mathrm{Fin}\,0N→Fin0. The colouring is a function on all of N\mathbb{N}N; the statement says nothing about its values outside [1,N][1, N][1,N].

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
