Let C2\mathbb C^2C2 carry its Zariski topology, and let ϕ0,ϕ1,ϕ2,ϕ3:C2→P1×P1\phi_0,\phi_1,\phi_2,\phi_3:\mathbb C^2\to\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1ϕ0,ϕ1,ϕ2,ϕ3:C2→P1×P1 be the four standard charts, sending (w0,w1)(w_0,w_1)(w0,w1) to ([w0:1],[w1:1])([w_0:1],[w_1:1])([w0:1],[w1:1]), ([1:w0],[w1:1])([1:w_0],[w_1:1])([1:w0],[w1:1]), ([w1:1],[1:w0])([w_1:1],[1:w_0])([w1:1],[1:w0]) and ([1:w0],[1:w1])([1:w_0],[1:w_1])([1:w0],[1:w1]). The group GL2(C)\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb C)GL2(C) acts on the Riemann sphere C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb C}=\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C=C∪{∞} by Möbius transformations z↦(az+b)/(cz+d)z\mapsto(az+b)/(cz+d)z↦(az+b)/(cz+d). For m∈Nm\in\mathbb Nm∈N and α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C, C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α is the closure in C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C of Cm,α={z∈C:Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}C_{m,\alpha}=\{z\in\mathbb C : \operatorname{Re}(z^m(|z|^2+\alpha))=0\}Cm,α={z∈C:Re(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}.

The main definitions are the atlas topology on P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1, the finest topology for which the map

⨆i=03C2⟶P1×P1,(i,w)⟼ϕi(w),\bigsqcup_{i=0}^{3}\mathbb C^2\longrightarrow\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1,\qquad (i,w)\longmapsto\phi_i(w),i=0⨆3C2⟶P1×P1,(i,w)⟼ϕi(w),

is continuous, and the ambient Möbius symmetry group of C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α,

Gm,α={σ a holomorphic Mo¨bius transformation of C^:σ(p)∈C^m,α  ⟺  p∈C^m,α for all p∈C^}.G_{m,\alpha}=\{\sigma\ \text{a holomorphic Möbius transformation of}\ \widehat{\mathbb C} : \sigma(p)\in\widehat C_{m,\alpha}\iff p\in\widehat C_{m,\alpha}\ \text{for all}\ p\in\widehat{\mathbb C}\}.Gm,α={σ a holomorphic Mo¨bius transformation of C:σ(p)∈Cm,α⟺p∈Cm,α for all p∈C}.

The file also defines:

  1. Coordinate maps of C2\mathbb C^2C2: the exchange (v0,v1)↦(v1,v0)(v_0,v_1)\mapsto(v_1,v_0)(v0,v1)↦(v1,v0); the inversion of one coordinate, as a formula on all of C2\mathbb C^2C2; the open set where a given coordinate is nonzero; and, on the torus (C×)2(\mathbb C^\times)^2(C×)2, the inversion of one coordinate and the simultaneous inversion (v0,v1)↦(v0−1,v1−1)(v_0,v_1)\mapsto(v_0^{-1},v_1^{-1})(v0,v1)↦(v0−1,v1−1).
  2. On P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1: the flip [x0:x1]↦[x1:x0][x_0:x_1]\mapsto[x_1:x_0][x0:x1]↦[x1:x0] of P1\mathbb P^1P1, applied to the left factor; and the property of a subset that its preimage under every ϕi\phi_iϕi is Zariski closed.
  3. Möbius transformations as permutations: the homomorphism from GL2(C)\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb C)GL2(C) to the permutation group of C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C; the stabilizer of a subset SSS, the permutations σ\sigmaσ with σ(p)∈S  ⟺  p∈S\sigma(p)\in S\iff p\in Sσ(p)∈S⟺p∈S; the matrices with rows (c,0),(0,1)(c,0),(0,1)(c,0),(0,1) and (0,c),(1,0)(0,c),(1,0)(0,c),(1,0) for c≠0c\ne0c=0, with the permutations z↦czz\mapsto czz↦cz and z↦c/zz\mapsto c/zz↦c/z they induce; and the matrix with rows (a,b),(0,1)(a,b),(0,1)(a,b),(0,1), for a≠0a\ne0a=0, representing z↦az+bz\mapsto az+bz↦az+b.
  4. A dihedral action: for n≥1n\ge1n≥1, a chosen isomorphism from Z/n\mathbb Z/nZ/n to the group of complex nnn-th roots of unity, i↦ωii\mapsto\omega^ii↦ωi with ω\omegaω a primitive nnn-th root of unity; and, for b≠0b\ne0b=0, the map from the dihedral group of order 2n2n2n, with rotations rir^iri and reflections srisr^isri, to permutations of C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C, given by ri↦(z↦ωiz)r^i\mapsto(z\mapsto\omega^iz)ri↦(z↦ωiz) and sri↦(z↦b ω−i/z)sr^i\mapsto(z\mapsto b\,\omega^{-i}/z)sri↦(z↦bω−i/z).
  5. The tangent directions of a binary form: {[p0:p1]∈P1:ap0m+bp1m=0}\{[p_0:p_1]\in\mathbb P^1 : ap_0^m+bp_1^m=0\}{[p0:p1]∈P1:ap0m+bp1m=0}.
  6. The arc θ↦eiθ\theta\mapsto e^{i\theta}θ↦eiθ for θ∈R\theta\in\mathbb Rθ∈R; the quintic expression (x2+y2)(x3−3xy2)−3x2y+y3(x^2+y^2)(x^3-3xy^2)-3x^2y+y^3(x2+y2)(x3−3xy2)−3x2y+y3 of equation (2), as a function of z=x+iyz=x+iyz=x+iy; and the coefficient eπi/3e^{\pi i/3}eπi/3.

The atlas topology is the setting in which the closure VαV_\alphaVα of Pα=0P_\alpha=0Pα=0 in P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1, introduced after equation (6), is identified and shown irreducible. Gm,αG_{m,\alpha}Gm,α is the full ambient Möbius symmetry group of Theorem 2 and equation (3); its elements are holomorphic by construction, the absence of anti-Möbius symmetries being a separate statement, and the dihedral map with n=2mn=2mn=2m and b2m=αˉ 2b^{2m}=\bar\alpha^{\,2}b2m=αˉ2 is used to show that it is dihedral of order 4m4m4m. Tangent directions count the branches at the ordinary mmm-fold points of Lemma 4; eiθe^{i\theta}eiθ parametrizes the examples α=eiθ\alpha=e^{i\theta}α=eiθ, 0<θ<π0<\theta<\pi0<θ<π, of Remark 5; the quintic and eπi/3e^{\pi i/3}eπi/3 are the example (2) and its rotation by sixty degrees.

Formalization Note: The total inversion formula uses Lean's convention 0−1=00^{-1}=00−1=0. The topologies on C2\mathbb C^2C2 and on P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1 are local instances, so the usual topologies are unchanged, and the definition does not assert that the atlas topology agrees with the standard Zariski topology of P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1. Möbius transformations are permutations of OnePoint ℂ in the image of GL (Fin 2) ℂ under Mathlib's action, so proportional matrices give the same element; the dihedral group is Mathlib's DihedralGroup n, and ω\omegaω comes from an abstract isomorphism of cyclic groups rather than an explicit exponential. The file also proves ∣eπi/3∣=1|e^{\pi i/3}|=1∣eπi/3∣=1.
