Let X∈Rn×d\mathbf X\in\mathbb R^{n\times d}X∈Rn×d have rows x1,…,xn\mathbf x_1,\dots,\mathbf x_nx1,…,xn, let ψ:Rd→M\psi:\mathbb R^d\to Mψ:Rd→M take values in a commutative additive monoid MMM, and let ϕ:M→Y\phi:M\to Yϕ:M→Y be arbitrary. Define

f(X)=ϕ(∑u∈Vψ(xu)).f(\mathbf X)=\phi\Big(\sum_{u\in\mathcal V}\psi(\mathbf x_u)\Big).f(X)=ϕ(u∈V∑ψ(xu)).

Then fff is permutation invariant: f(PX)=f(X)f(\mathbf P\mathbf X)=f(\mathbf X)f(PX)=f(X) for every n×nn\times nn×n permutation matrix P\mathbf PP.

This is the book's first example of a permutation-invariant function on sets, the readout of Deep Sets.

Formalization Note PX\mathbf P\mathbf XPX reorders the rows of X\mathbf XX, row uuu of PX\mathbf P\mathbf XPX being row σ−1(u)\sigma^{-1}(u)σ−1(u) of X\mathbf XX; the statement quantifies over all σ∈Σn\sigma\in\Sigma_nσ∈Σn.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
