Claim 15.5. Equation (15.4) and Equation (15.5) are equivalent: for fixed (w,b)(w, b)(w,b) the best feasible assignment of the slack variables is ξi=ℓhinge((w,b),(xi,yi))\xi_i = \ell_{hinge}((w,b), (x_i, y_i))ξi=ℓhinge((w,b),(xi,yi)).

Formally: every feasible slack vector has 1m∑iξi≥LShinge((w,b))\frac1m\sum_i \xi_i \ge L^{hinge}_S((w,b))m1∑iξi≥LShinge((w,b)), and the hinge losses form a feasible slack vector; hence the two problems have the same value and the same minimizers (w,b)(w, b)(w,b).

/-- **Claim 15.5** (p. 207). Equation (15.4) and Equation (15.5) are equivalent: for fixed
`(w, b)`, the best feasible slack is `ξᵢ = ℓ_hinge((w, b), (xᵢ, yᵢ))`. Stated as: every feasible
slack vector has `(1/m) ∑ ξᵢ ≥ L^hinge_S((w, b))`, and the hinge losses form a feasible slack
vector (whose average is `L^hinge_S((w, b))`), so the two minimization problems have the same
value and the same minimizers `(w, b)`. -/

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
