Let P(x)P(x)P(x) be a linear function, P(x)=ax+bP(x)=ax+bP(x)=ax+b . Then, if this works out, our answer will be just a2+b2a^2+b^2a2+b2 , because the remainder when a linear function P(x)P(x)P(x) is divided by a quadratic is just P(x)P(x)P(x) . Now, using synthetic division, the remainder when ax+bax+bax+b is divided by x−2x - 2x−2 is b+2a=3b + 2a = 3b+2a=3 . Similarly, for x−3x-3x−3 , the remainder is b+3a=2b + 3a = 2b+3a=2 . Solving, we get a=−1a = -1a=−1 and b=5b = 5b=5 , so the function is P(x)=−x+5.P(x) = -x + 5.P(x)=−x+5. Success! Our answer is (−1)2+52=26(-1)^2+5^2=\boxed{26}(−1)2+52=26 .

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
