The singular locus of VαV_\alphaVα is exactly {(0,0),(∞,∞)}\{(0,0),(\infty,\infty)\}{(0,0),(∞,∞)} for m≥2m\ge2m≥2 and α∉R\alpha\notin\mathbb Rα∈/R

Let m≥2m\ge2m≥2 be an integer and let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ; no condition on ∣α∣|\alpha|∣α∣ is imposed. For x=(x0,x1)x=(x_0,x_1)x=(x0,x1) and y=(y0,y1)y=(y_0,y_1)y=(y0,y1) in C2\mathbb C^2C2 let

Fα(x,y)=α x0mx1 y1m+1+x0m+1y0 y1m+αˉ x1m+1y0m y1+x0 x1m y0m+1,F_\alpha(x,y)=\alpha\,x_0^m x_1\,y_1^{m+1}+x_0^{m+1}y_0\,y_1^m+\bar\alpha\,x_1^{m+1}y_0^m\,y_1+x_0\,x_1^m\,y_0^{m+1},Fα(x,y)=αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1,

the bihomogenization of bidegree (m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1) of Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha(X,Y)=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY), and let Vα={Fα=0}⊂P1×P1V_\alpha=\{F_\alpha=0\}\subset\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1Vα={Fα=0}⊂P1×P1. Let Σα\Sigma_\alphaΣα be the set of its singular points by the Jacobian criterion: the points ([x],[y])([x],[y])([x],[y]) such that FαF_\alphaFα, as a function on C2×C2\mathbb C^2\times\mathbb C^2C2×C2, vanishes at (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) together with its differential. Identify the Riemann sphere C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb C}=\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C=C∪{∞} with P1\mathbb P^1P1 by ι(z)=[z:1]\iota(z)=[z:1]ι(z)=[z:1] for z∈Cz\in\mathbb Cz∈C and ι(∞)=[1:0]\iota(\infty)=[1:0]ι(∞)=[1:0].

Then

Σα={(ι(0),ι(0)), (ι(∞),ι(∞))}={([0:1],[0:1]), ([1:0],[1:0])}.\Sigma_\alpha=\bigl\{(\iota(0),\iota(0)),\ (\iota(\infty),\iota(\infty))\bigr\}=\bigl\{([0:1],[0:1]),\ ([1:0],[1:0])\bigr\}.Σα={(ι(0),ι(0)), (ι(∞),ι(∞))}={([0:1],[0:1]), ([1:0],[1:0])}.

This is the singular-point clause of Lemma 4 of the note: the only singular points of VαV_\alphaVα are (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) and (∞,∞)(\infty,\infty)(∞,∞). It holds for every nonreal α\alphaα, without the condition ∣α∣=1|\alpha|=1∣α∣=1; that both points are ordinary mmm-fold points is a separate statement. The proof of Theorem 2 relies on equivalences preserving this pair.

Formalization Note: ι\iotaι is Mathlib's OnePoint.equivProjectivization from OnePoint ℂ to Projectivization ℂ (Fin 2 → ℂ), and the singular locus is defined through HasFDerivAt at chosen representatives.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
