Let CCC be a closed convex subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn and F:Rn→RnF : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^nF:Rn→Rn continuous. Assume the solution set SSS of VI(F,C)\mathrm{VI}(F, C)VI(F,C) is nonempty and condition (1.2) holds, and let γ,σ∈(0,1)\gamma, \sigma \in (0,1)γ,σ∈(0,1). Let x∈Cx \in Cx∈C with r(x)≠0r(x) \ne 0r(x)=0, let kkk be a nonnegative integer satisfying (2.1) at xxx, and put

z=x−γkr(x),H={y∣⟨F(z),y−z⟩≤0},xˉ=PH[x],x+=PC∩H[x].z = x - \gamma^k r(x),\quad H = \{y \mid \langle F(z), y - z\rangle \le 0\},\quad \bar x = P_H[x],\quad x^+ = P_{C \cap H}[x].z=x−γkr(x),H={y∣⟨F(z),y−z⟩≤0},xˉ=PH[x],x+=PC∩H[x].

Then for every solution x∗∈Sx^* \in Sx∗∈S,

∥x+−x∗∥2≤∥x−x∗∥2−∥x+−xˉ∥2−(γkσ∥F(z)∥)2∥r(x)∥4.(2.6)\|x^+ - x^*\|^2 \le \|x - x^*\|^2 - \|x^+ - \bar x\|^2 - \left(\frac{\gamma^k \sigma}{\|F(z)\|}\right)^2 \|r(x)\|^4. \tag{2.6}∥x+−x∗∥2≤∥x−x∗∥2−∥x+−xˉ∥2−(∥F(z)∥γkσ)2∥r(x)∥4.(2.6)

Along a run of Algorithm 2.1 (x=xix = x^ix=xi, γk=ηi\gamma^k = \eta_iγk=ηi, x+=xi+1x^+ = x^{i+1}x+=xi+1), (2.6) shows that the distance of the iterates to every solution is nonincreasing, with a quantified decrease; this is the backbone of the convergence proof.

Formalization Note Single-step form: the paper writes (2.6) along the run with xix^ixi and ηi=γki\eta_i = \gamma^{k_i}ηi=γki; here xxx and kkk are generic, with kkk satisfying (2.1) at xxx. Under the hypotheses F(z)≠0F(z) \ne 0F(z)=0, so the division is genuine (Lean's convention a/0=0a/0 = 0a/0=0 is never invoked). Projections are projOnto.

/-- Solodov–Svaiter, proof of Theorem 2.1, (2.6) (pp. 769–770), for one step of Algorithm 2.1:
with `z = x − γᵏ r(x)`, `H = {y | ⟨F(z), y − z⟩ ≤ 0}`, `x̄ = P_H[x]` and `x⁺ = P_{C∩H}[x]`,
for every solution `x*`,
`‖x⁺ − x*‖² ≤ ‖x − x*‖² − ‖x⁺ − x̄‖² − (γᵏ σ / ‖F(z)‖)² ‖r(x)‖⁴`.

**Formalization Note.** Single-step form: the paper writes (2.6) along the run, with `xⁱ`,
`ηᵢ = γ^{kᵢ}`; here `x` and `k` are generic, with `k` satisfying (2.1) at `x`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
