Consider one stage ttt of the Bellman equations (2) with stage feasible set SSS (binary states), stage cost ggg, finite support ξ1,…,ξK∈RJ\xi^1,\dots,\xi^K \in \mathbb R^Jξ1,…,ξK∈RJ, next-stage values Qk(x)Q^k(x)Qk(x), and the Type 3 ambiguity set

PD3(x)={p≥0:∑kpk=1, (ξˉ(p)−μ(x))⊤Σ(x)−1(ξˉ(p)−μ(x))≤γ, ∑kpk(ξk−μ(x))(ξk−μ(x))⊤⪯ηΣ(x)},\mathcal P^{D_3}(x) = \Big\{p \ge 0 : \sum_k p_k = 1,\ (\bar\xi(p)-\mu(x))^\top\Sigma(x)^{-1}(\bar\xi(p)-\mu(x)) \le \gamma,\ \sum_k p_k(\xi^k-\mu(x))(\xi^k-\mu(x))^\top \preceq \eta\Sigma(x)\Big\},PD3(x)={p≥0:k∑pk=1, (ξˉ(p)−μ(x))⊤Σ(x)−1(ξˉ(p)−μ(x))≤γ, k∑pk(ξk−μ(x))(ξk−μ(x))⊤⪯ηΣ(x)},

where ξˉ(p)=∑kpkξk\bar\xi(p) = \sum_k p_k\xi^kξˉ(p)=∑kpkξk. Assume that for every feasible (x,y)∈S(x,y) \in S(x,y)∈S, Σ(x)≻0\Sigma(x) \succ 0Σ(x)≻0 and Slater's condition holds at xxx: some probability vector ppp satisfies the second constraint with <<< and the third with ≺\prec≺.

Then for every real qqq, qqq is the minimum of the stage Bellman equation

Qt=min⁡(x,y)∈S{g(x,y)+max⁡p∈PD3(x)∑kpkQk(x)}Q_t = \min_{(x,y)\in S}\Big\{g(x,y) + \max_{p\in\mathcal P^{D_3}(x)} \sum_k p_k Q^k(x)\Big\}Qt=(x,y)∈Smin{g(x,y)+p∈PD3(x)maxk∑pkQk(x)}

if and only if qqq is the minimum of the mixed-integer SDP

This is the paper's main reformulation: under the Delage–Ye-type moment set, the min–max stage problem becomes a single minimization, which is what makes the SDDiP-type algorithms of the paper applicable.

Formalization Note "qqq is the minimum" is IsLeast on the set of values (for the Bellman side, only (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) at which the inner maximum is attained contribute, via IsGreatest). The statement holds for any SSS and any ggg: the page's linearity of ggg and compactness and polyhedrality of SSS are not needed and are dropped (a disclosed generalization); the binary condition is kept as hbin. Added relative to the page: Σ(x)≻0\Sigma(x) \succ 0Σ(x)≻0 (implicit, since the page writes Σ(x)−1\Sigma(x)^{-1}Σ(x)−1), p≥0p \ge 0p≥0 in the ambiguity set ((C-20f)), and the Slater point is a probability vector (Theorem A.3). The Slater clause of the page is cut at the right margin; its missing text is restored from Theorem B.6, p. 36. μ,Σ\mu,\Sigmaμ,Σ are arbitrary functions of xxx, and QkQ^kQk is a free real function.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
