Let m∈Nm\in\mathbb Nm∈N and α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C. Polynomials in C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y] are read in the coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ, with real locus Z(P)={z:P(z,zˉ)=0}Z(P)=\{z : P(z,\bar z)=0\}Z(P)={z:P(z,zˉ)=0}, and Pα=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY). Write Isom(C)\mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb C)Isom(C) for the group of distance-preserving bijections of C\mathbb CC. Let C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb C}=\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C=C∪{∞} be the Riemann sphere and P1\mathbb P^1P1 the complex projective line, identified by z↦[z:1]z\mapsto[z:1]z↦[z:1] and ∞↦[1:0]\infty\mapsto[1:0]∞↦[1:0]. A Möbius matrix is any g∈GL2(C)g\in\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb C)g∈GL2(C), acting on P1\mathbb P^1P1 through homogeneous coordinates, and gˉ\bar ggˉ is the matrix with conjugate entries.

The central objects are the direct isometry group of a set S⊆CS\subseteq\mathbb CS⊆C, the extremal curve of equation (1), and its spherical closure:

Sym+(S)={T∈Isom(C):T(z)∈S  ⟺  z∈S for all z, and T(z)=az+b for some a,b∈C with ∣a∣=1},\mathrm{Sym}^+(S)=\{T\in\mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb C) : T(z)\in S\iff z\in S\ \text{for all}\ z,\ \text{and}\ T(z)=az+b\ \text{for some}\ a,b\in\mathbb C\ \text{with}\ |a|=1\},Sym+(S)={T∈Isom(C):T(z)∈S⟺z∈S for all z, and T(z)=az+b for some a,b∈C with ∣a∣=1}, Cm,α={z∈C:Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0},C^m,α=the closure of Cm,α in C^.C_{m,\alpha}=\{z\in\mathbb C : \operatorname{Re}\big(z^m(|z|^2+\alpha)\big)=0\},\qquad \widehat C_{m,\alpha}=\text{the closure of}\ C_{m,\alpha}\ \text{in}\ \widehat{\mathbb C}.Cm,α={z∈C:Re(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0},Cm,α=the closure of Cm,α in C.

The file also defines:

  1. The map sending a direct symmetry pair (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) of Z(P)Z(P)Z(P) to z↦az+bz\mapsto az+bz↦az+b in Sym+(Z(P))\mathrm{Sym}^+(Z(P))Sym+(Z(P)), and the homomorphism T↦T(1)−T(0)T\mapsto T(1)-T(0)T↦T(1)−T(0) from Sym+(S)\mathrm{Sym}^+(S)Sym+(S) to the multiplicative monoid of C\mathbb CC.
  2. The bihomogeneous form of bidegree (m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1) in pairs x=(x0,x1)x=(x_0,x_1)x=(x0,x1), y=(y0,y1)y=(y_0,y_1)y=(y0,y1), Fα(x,y)=αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1F_\alpha(x,y)=\alpha x_0^mx_1y_1^{m+1}+x_0^{m+1}y_0y_1^m+\bar\alpha x_1^{m+1}y_0^my_1+x_0x_1^my_0^{m+1}Fα(x,y)=αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1, which equals Pα(X,Y)P_\alpha(X,Y)Pα(X,Y) at x=(X,1)x=(X,1)x=(X,1), y=(Y,1)y=(Y,1)y=(Y,1); the set Vα⊆P1×P1V_\alpha\subseteq\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1Vα⊆P1×P1 of points where FαF_\alphaFα vanishes; the subset where FαF_\alphaFα and its derivative on C2×C2\mathbb C^2\times\mathbb C^2C2×C2 both vanish at the representative; and the real diagonal p↦(p,pˉ)p\mapsto(p,\bar p)p↦(p,pˉ) from C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C to P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1.
  3. Actions: (p,q)↦(gp,gˉq)(p,q)\mapsto(gp,\bar gq)(p,q)↦(gp,gˉq) (Möbius) and (p,q)↦(gq,gˉp)(p,q)\mapsto(gq,\bar gp)(p,q)↦(gq,gˉp) (anti-Möbius) on P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1; the linear map (u,v)↦(gu,gˉv)(u,v)\mapsto(gu,\bar gv)(u,v)↦(gu,gˉv) of C2×C2\mathbb C^2\times\mathbb C^2C2×C2; and, on C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C, the dilation z↦czz\mapsto czz↦cz fixing ∞\infty∞ and the inversion that exchanges 000 and ∞\infty∞ and sends z≠0z\ne0z=0 to c/zc/zc/z.
  4. Equations: the pullback Fβ(g (X,1)T, gˉ (Y,1)T)∈C[X,Y]F_\beta\big(g\,(X,1)^{\mathsf T},\ \bar g\,(Y,1)^{\mathsf T}\big)\in\mathbb C[X,Y]Fβ(g(X,1)T, gˉ(Y,1)T)∈C[X,Y] for β∈C\beta\in\mathbb Cβ∈C; the binary forms a1Xm+a2Yma_1X^m+a_2Y^ma1Xm+a2Ym and the four-term forms a1Xm+a2Ym+XY(a3Xm+a4Ym)a_1X^m+a_2Y^m+XY(a_3X^m+a_4Y^m)a1Xm+a2Ym+XY(a3Xm+a4Ym), among them the polynomial obtained from Pβ(c/X,cˉ/Y)P_\beta(c/X,\bar c/Y)Pβ(c/X,cˉ/Y) by clearing the denominator Xm+1Ym+1X^{m+1}Y^{m+1}Xm+1Ym+1, and the equation um+vm+uv(αˉum+αvm)u^m+v^m+uv(\bar\alpha u^m+\alpha v^m)um+vm+uv(αˉum+αvm) of Pα=0P_\alpha=0Pα=0 in the reciprocal coordinates u=1/Xu=1/Xu=1/X, v=1/Yv=1/Yv=1/Y; and the mixed-chart polynomial aX+Y+bXm+1Ym+XmYm+1aX+Y+bX^{m+1}Y^m+X^mY^{m+1}aX+Y+bXm+1Ym+XmYm+1.
  5. Charts and topology: the four charts C2→P1×P1\mathbb C^2\to\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1C2→P1×P1 sending (w0,w1)(w_0,w_1)(w0,w1) to ([w0:1],[w1:1])([w_0:1],[w_1:1])([w0:1],[w1:1]), ([1:w0],[w1:1])([1:w_0],[w_1:1])([1:w0],[w1:1]), ([w1:1],[1:w0])([w_1:1],[1:w_0])([w1:1],[1:w0]) and ([1:w0],[1:w1])([1:w_0],[1:w_1])([1:w0],[1:w1]); the Zariski topology on C2\mathbb C^2C2, induced from the prime spectrum of C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y] by sending a point to the kernel of evaluation there; the affine real diagonal {(z,zˉ):z∈Z(P)}\{(z,\bar z) : z\in Z(P)\}{(z,zˉ):z∈Z(P)}; evaluation at a point, the Jacobian condition P=∂XP=∂YP=0P=\partial_XP=\partial_YP=0P=∂XP=∂YP=0, and the differential given by the formal partial derivatives; and, for a function FFF on a normed space, the critical-zero condition F(x)=0F(x)=0F(x)=0 and DF(x)=0DF(x)=0DF(x)=0.

Sym+(C)\mathrm{Sym}^+(C)Sym+(C) is the group whose order NNN is bounded in Theorem 1. Theorem 2 concerns the Möbius and anti-Möbius maps preserving C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α; as in the proof of Theorem 2 they act on VαV_\alphaVα by (X,Y)↦(M(X),M‾(Y))(X,Y)\mapsto(M(X),\overline M(Y))(X,Y)↦(M(X),M(Y)) and (X,Y)↦(M(Y),M‾(X))(X,Y)\mapsto(M(Y),\overline M(X))(X,Y)↦(M(Y),M(X)), and the pulled-back equations give the coefficient ratios (8). The charts, the Zariski topology, the Jacobian and critical-zero conditions and the chart equations are where the closure VαV_\alphaVα and the singular points (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) and (∞,∞)(\infty,\infty)(∞,∞) of Lemma 4 are computed.

Formalization Note: The sphere is OnePoint ℂ, P1\mathbb P^1P1 is Mathlib's projectivization of C2\mathbb C^2C2, isometries are ℂ ≃ᵢ ℂ, and Möbius matrices are arbitrary elements of GL (Fin 2) ℂ. Points of P1\mathbb P^1P1 are evaluated on Mathlib's chosen representative; the agreement of VαV_\alphaVα with the Zariski closure of the affine curve, and of the homogeneous critical set with the chart Jacobians, are separate statements. The critical-zero condition uses a genuine Fréchet derivative (HasFDerivAt), and the Zariski topology on C2\mathbb C^2C2 is installed only locally. The file also proves that atm+bat^m+batm+b is separable when m≥1m\ge1m≥1 and a,b≠0a,b\ne0a,b=0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
