This is a general counting lemma for colourings of pairs: if an involution JJJ of a set WWW keeps the colours of the pairs in WWW, and a point v∈Wv \in Wv∈W and its image J(v)J(v)J(v) have the same colour degrees in W∪{e}W \cup \{e\}W∪{e}, then the pairs (v,e)(v, e)(v,e) and (J(v),e)(J(v), e)(J(v),e) have the same colour.

Let α\alphaα and γ\gammaγ be types with decidable equality (points and colours), and let col:α→α→γ\mathrm{col} : \alpha \to \alpha \to \gammacol:α→α→γ give each ordered pair (x,y)(x, y)(x,y) a colour col(x,y)\mathrm{col}(x, y)col(x,y). Let WWW be a finite subset of α\alphaα, let e∈αe \in \alphae∈α with e∉We \notin We∈/W, and let J:α→αJ : \alpha \to \alphaJ:α→α satisfy, for all x,y∈Wx, y \in Wx,y∈W:

  1. J(x)∈WJ(x) \in WJ(x)∈W;
  2. J(J(x))=xJ(J(x)) = xJ(J(x))=x;
  3. col(J(x),J(y))=col(x,y)\mathrm{col}(J(x), J(y)) = \mathrm{col}(x, y)col(J(x),J(y))=col(x,y).

Let v∈Wv \in Wv∈W, and suppose that vvv and J(v)J(v)J(v) have the same number of neighbours of each colour in W∪{e}W \cup \{e\}W∪{e}: for every colour i∈γi \in \gammai∈γ,

∣{ w∈(W∪{e})∖{v}:col(v,w)=i }∣=∣{ w∈(W∪{e})∖{J(v)}:col(J(v),w)=i }∣.\bigl|\{\, w \in (W \cup \{e\}) \setminus \{v\} : \mathrm{col}(v, w) = i \,\}\bigr| = \bigl|\{\, w \in (W \cup \{e\}) \setminus \{J(v)\} : \mathrm{col}(J(v), w) = i \,\}\bigr| .{w∈(W∪{e})∖{v}:col(v,w)=i}={w∈(W∪{e})∖{J(v)}:col(J(v),w)=i}.

Then

col(v,e)=col(J(v),e).\mathrm{col}(v, e) = \mathrm{col}(J(v), e) .col(v,e)=col(J(v),e).

In the mission the lemma is applied with WWW the central neighbourhood without its endpoint, e=2m+1e = 2m + 1e=2m+1, J(x)=2m−xJ(x) = 2m - xJ(x)=2m−x and col(x,y)=c(∣x−y∣)\mathrm{col}(x, y) = c(|x - y|)col(x,y)=c(∣x−y∣); the saturation theorem supplies the equal colour degrees, and the conclusion is the forced reflection.

Formalization Note. The colour function takes ordered pairs and need not be symmetric; the degrees of vvv and J(v)J(v)J(v) are counted with vvv and J(v)J(v)J(v) as first argument, and the pair of a point with itself is not counted. The types α\alphaα and γ\gammaγ are arbitrary (Lean Type* with DecidableEq), and WWW is a Finset. The conditions on JJJ are required only on WWW. The case J(v)=vJ(v) = vJ(v)=v is allowed, and the conclusion is then immediate.
