Let h:Rn→Rh : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}h:Rn→R be twice continuously differentiable with bounded Hessian, P:Rm→(−∞,+∞]P : \mathbb{R}^m \to (-\infty, +\infty]P:Rm→(−∞,+∞] proper and lower semicontinuous, ϕ:Rn→R\phi : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}ϕ:Rn→R twice continuously differentiable and convex, M:Rn→Rm\mathcal M : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^mM:Rn→Rm linear with adjoint M∗\mathcal M^*M∗, and β>0\beta > 0β>0. Let (xt,yt,zt)t≥0(x^t, y^t, z^t)_{t \ge 0}(xt,yt,zt)t≥0 be a sequence generated by the proximal ADMM with penalty β\betaβ and proximal function ϕ\phiϕ (initial points x0,z0x^0, z^0x0,z0 arbitrary, y0y^0y0 unconstrained). Suppose Assumption 1 holds with witnesses σ,δ,γ\sigma, \delta, \gammaσ,δ,γ and Q1,Q2,T1,T2,Q3\mathcal Q_1, \mathcal Q_2, \mathcal T_1, \mathcal T_2, \mathcal Q_3Q1,Q2,T1,T2,Q3. For a self-map T\mathcal TT write ∥x∥T2:=⟨x,Tx⟩\|x\|^2_{\mathcal T} := \langle x, \mathcal T x\rangle∥x∥T2:=⟨x,Tx⟩. Suppose moreover that condition (29) holds with the same σ\sigmaσ and γ\gammaγ: there are ζ\zetaζ with 0<ζ<2βγ0 < \zeta < 2\beta\gamma0<ζ<2βγ and h0∈Rh_0 \in \mathbb{R}h0∈R such that

h(x)−1σζ∥∇h(x)∥2≥h0for all x.h(x) - \frac{1}{\sigma\zeta}\|\nabla h(x)\|^2 \ge h_0 \qquad \text{for all } x .h(x)−σζ1∥∇h(x)∥2≥h0for all x.

Suppose that either

  1. M\mathcal MM is invertible and lim inf⁡∥y∥→∞P(y)=∞\liminf_{\|y\| \to \infty} P(y) = \inftyliminf∥y∥→∞P(y)=∞; or
  2. lim inf⁡∥x∥→∞h(x)=∞\liminf_{\|x\| \to \infty} h(x) = \inftyliminf∥x∥→∞h(x)=∞ and inf⁡yP(y)>−∞\inf_y P(y) > -\inftyinfyP(y)>−∞.

Then the sequence {(xt,yt,zt)}\{(x^t, y^t, z^t)\}{(xt,yt,zt)} is bounded: there is RRR with

∥xt∥≤R,∥yt∥≤R,∥zt∥≤Rfor all t≥0.\|x^t\| \le R, \quad \|y^t\| \le R, \quad \|z^t\| \le R \qquad \text{for all } t \ge 0 .∥xt∥≤R,∥yt∥≤R,∥zt∥≤Rfor all t≥0.

Boundedness guarantees that the sequence has a cluster point, which is the hypothesis under which the convergence results for the proximal ADMM (stationarity of cluster points, and whole-sequence convergence under the Kurdyka–Łojasiewicz property) apply.

Formalization Note The paper defines h0h_0h0 as the infimum inf⁡x{h(x)−1σζ∥∇h(x)∥2}\inf_x\{h(x) - \frac{1}{\sigma\zeta}\|\nabla h(x)\|^2\}infx{h(x)−σζ1∥∇h(x)∥2} and requires it to be >−∞> -\infty>−∞; here h0h_0h0 is any real lower bound. The infimum is finite exactly when a real lower bound exists, and the proof uses h0h_0h0 only as a lower bound, so the two readings give the same result. "Invertible" is bijectivity of M\mathcal MM as a map Rn→Rm\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^mRn→Rm (the dimensions are kept separate). lim inf⁡∥y∥→∞P(y)=∞\liminf_{\|y\|\to\infty} P(y) = \inftyliminf∥y∥→∞P(y)=∞ is encoded as: for every r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R}r∈R there is RRR with P(y)>rP(y) > rP(y)>r whenever ∥y∥>R\|y\| > R∥y∥>R; likewise for hhh. inf⁡yP(y)>−∞\inf_y P(y) > -\inftyinfyP(y)>−∞ is: some real ccc satisfies c≤P(y)c \le P(y)c≤P(y) for all yyy. The two cases are one disjunctive hypothesis of a single statement. The bound covers all three blocks and all t≥0t \ge 0t≥0; y0y^0y0 is a single (arbitrary) point and does not affect boundedness.

/-- Theorem 2 of Li–Pong (p. 11): boundedness of the proximal ADMM sequence.
Under the standing assumptions, Assumption 1 and condition (29) (with the same `σ`, `γ`),
if either (i) `M` is invertible and `P` is coercive, or (ii) `h` is coercive and `P` is
bounded below, then every proximal ADMM sequence `(x^t, y^t, z^t)` is bounded. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
