Positivity is preserved along Collatz orbits

Let CCC be the Collatz step map on N\mathbb{N}N, so that C(n)=n/2C(n)=n/2C(n)=n/2 for even nnn (natural-number division) and C(n)=3n+1C(n)=3n+1C(n)=3n+1 for odd nnn. Then the set of positive integers is invariant under CCC: for every m≥0m \ge 0m≥0 and every n>0n > 0n>0,

Cm(n)>0.C^{m}(n) > 0 .Cm(n)>0.

The statement is needed because CCC is defined as a total function on N\mathbb{N}N with C(0)=0C(0)=0C(0)=0, so 000 is a fixed point lying outside the conjecture's scope. Every argument that follows an orbit and then restarts the analysis at a later point of that orbit must know that the later point is again a legitimate starting value; this lemma supplies exactly that. The proof is an induction on mmm using the one-step fact that a positive even number is at least 222, so halving it leaves a positive number, while 3n+13n+13n+1 is positive outright.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
