Let P1\mathbb P^1P1 be the complex projective line, the set of lines through the origin of C2\mathbb C^2C2, with homogeneous coordinates [x0:x1][x_0:x_1][x0:x1]. Consider the four standard charts ϕi ⁣:C2→P1×P1\phi_i\colon\mathbb C^2\to\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1ϕi:C2→P1×P1, ϕ0(X,Y)=([X:1],[Y:1])\phi_0(X,Y)=([X:1],[Y:1])ϕ0(X,Y)=([X:1],[Y:1]), ϕ1(u,Y)=([1:u],[Y:1])\phi_1(u,Y)=([1:u],[Y:1])ϕ1(u,Y)=([1:u],[Y:1]), ϕ2(v,X)=([X:1],[1:v])\phi_2(v,X)=([X:1],[1:v])ϕ2(v,X)=([X:1],[1:v]) and ϕ3(u,v)=([1:u],[1:v])\phi_3(u,v)=([1:u],[1:v])ϕ3(u,v)=([1:u],[1:v]). Give C2\mathbb C^2C2 its Zariski topology, whose closed sets are the common zero sets of families of polynomials in two variables, and P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1 the atlas topology, the final topology of the four charts: a set U⊆P1×P1U\subseteq\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1U⊆P1×P1 is open if and only if ϕi−1(U)\phi_i^{-1}(U)ϕi−1(U) is Zariski open in C2\mathbb C^2C2 for i=0,1,2,3i=0,1,2,3i=0,1,2,3.

Then for every j∈{0,1,2,3}j\in\{0,1,2,3\}j∈{0,1,2,3} the image of the chart ϕj\phi_jϕj is open:

ϕj(C2) is open in P1×P1.\phi_j(\mathbb C^2)\ \text{is open in}\ \mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1.ϕj(C2) is open in P1×P1.

This is part of the construction of the topology on P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1 in which VαV_\alphaVα, the closure of the curve (6), is taken; the note introduces VαV_\alphaVα before Lemma 4.

Formalization Note: the atlas topology is the final topology of the map from the disjoint union of four copies of C2\mathbb C^2C2 given by the four charts; it is not the product topology. The Zariski topology on C2\mathbb C^2C2 is induced from the prime spectrum of the polynomial ring through evaluation ideals. Both topologies are local instances.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
