Let ppp be an odd prime and let L\mathbb{L}L be a totally real number field, Galois over Q\mathbb{Q}Q, of degree [L:Q]≥3[\mathbb{L}:\mathbb{Q}] \ge 3[L:Q]≥3, whose Galois group G=Gal(L/Q)G = \mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{L}/\mathbb{Q})G=Gal(L/Q) is not of exponent 222: some σ∈G\sigma \in Gσ∈G has σ2≠1\sigma^2 \neq 1σ2=1. Then, with r=[L:Q]−1r = [\mathbb{L}:\mathbb{Q}] - 1r=[L:Q]−1 the unit rank, there is a continuous injective group homomorphism

f ⁣:Zp r↪U(L)=∏v∣pOLv×f \colon \mathbb{Z}_p^{\,r} \hookrightarrow U(\mathbb{L}) = \prod_{v \mid p} \mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{L}_v}^\timesf:Zpr↪U(L)=v∣p∏OLv×

into the semilocal units at ppp, all of whose values lie in the ppp-adic closure E‾\overline{E}E of the global units EEE. By Leopoldt.leopoldtConjecture_iff_exists_continuous_injection this is Leopoldt's conjecture DL(L)=0\mathcal{D}_L(\mathbb{L}) = 0DL(L)=0 for such L\mathbb{L}L.

This is Leopoldt.galois_totallyReal_injection_of_three_le_finrank with the multiquadratic fields removed. When every σ∈G\sigma \in Gσ∈G satisfies σ2=1\sigma^2 = 1σ2=1, L=Q(a1,…,ak)\mathbb{L} = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a_1},\dots,\sqrt{a_k})L=Q(a1,…,ak) is a totally real multiquadratic field, and there the conjecture is proved (Leopoldt.leopoldt_totallyReal_multiquadratic) by the eigen-decomposition of the units under the characters G→{±1}G \to \{\pm 1\}G→{±1}. The remaining fields, for instance cyclic cubic fields or real subfields of Q(ζpn)\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_{p^n})Q(ζpn) of degree >2> 2>2, are exactly those in which some Galois eigenspace of E⊗Q‾pE \otimes \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_pE⊗Qp is attached to a character of order greater than 222. This is where the genuine difficulty of Leopoldt's conjecture for Galois totally real fields lies; for abelian L\mathbb{L}L it is Brumer's theorem, which relies on Baker's theory of linear forms in ppp-adic logarithms.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
