Fix subextremal Kerr–Newman parameters M>0M>0M>0, Q≠0Q\neq 0Q=0, a2+Q2<M2a^2+Q^2<M^2a2+Q2<M2, a frequency ω∈R\omega\in\mathbb Rω∈R and an azimuthal number mmm (kept real), and let U={r>r+, 0<θ<π}U=\{r>r_+,\ 0<\theta<\pi\}U={r>r+, 0<θ<π}. The statement is the conjunction of the two spin cases.

Positive spin. For every quadruple of C∞C^\inftyC∞ fields (ψ2,ψ1,k,s)(\psi_2,\psi_1,k,s)(ψ2,ψ1,k,s) on UUU and every x∈Ux\in Ux∈U: the four first-order equations (1a)–(1d) of Hintz hold at xxx if and only if the transformed system (7),

(Δ ∂r−i∂θ)z+=C z−,(Δ ∂r+i∂θ)z−=adj⁡(C) z+,(\sqrt\Delta\,\partial_r-i\partial_\theta)z_+=C\,z_-,\qquad(\sqrt\Delta\,\partial_r+i\partial_\theta)z_-=\operatorname{adj}(C)\,z_+,(Δ∂r−i∂θ)z+=Cz−,(Δ∂r+i∂θ)z−=adj(C)z+,

holds at xxx for z+=adj⁡(X) y+(+)z_+=\operatorname{adj}(X)\,y_+^{(+)}z+=adj(X)y+(+), z−=X∗ y−(+)z_-=X^*\,y_-^{(+)}z−=X∗y−(+), where y±(+)=Δ5/4sin⁡θ (ψ2±iΔ−1/2ψ1, −2Q(k±iΔ−1/2s))y_\pm^{(+)}=\Delta^{5/4}\sqrt{\sin\theta}\,(\psi_2\pm i\Delta^{-1/2}\psi_1,\,-2Q(k\pm i\Delta^{-1/2}s))y±(+)=Δ5/4sinθ(ψ2±iΔ−1/2ψ1,−2Q(k±iΔ−1/2s)) are the chiral variables of eq. (3), XXX is the matrix integrating factor of eq. (5), and C=det⁡X⋅X−1(c(+)I−B(+))(X∗)−1C=\det X\cdot X^{-1}(c^{(+)}I-B^{(+)})(X^*)^{-1}C=detX⋅X−1(c(+)I−B(+))(X∗)−1 with the coefficients of eq. (4).

Negative spin. The same equivalence for C∞C^\inftyC∞ fields (ψ−2,ψ−1,n,ℓ)(\psi_{-2},\psi_{-1},n,\ell)(ψ−2,ψ−1,n,ℓ), the negative-spin system obtained from (1a)–(1d) by the paper's replacement rules, the chiral variables y±(−)=Δ−3/4sin⁡θ (ψ−2∓iΔ1/2ψ−1, 2Q(n∓iΔ1/2ℓ))y_\pm^{(-)}=\Delta^{-3/4}\sqrt{\sin\theta}\,(\psi_{-2}\mp i\Delta^{1/2}\psi_{-1},\,2Q(n\mp i\Delta^{1/2}\ell))y±(−)=Δ−3/4sinθ(ψ−2∓iΔ1/2ψ−1,2Q(n∓iΔ1/2ℓ)) and the coefficients with ς=−1\varsigma=-1ς=−1.

The transformation (ψ)↦(y+,y−)↦(z+,z−)(\psi)\mapsto(y_+,y_-)\mapsto(z_+,z_-)(ψ)↦(y+,y−)↦(z+,z−) is explicit and invertible on UUU (inverse maps invPos, invNeg, yplus_of_zplus, yminus_of_zminus), so this is a two-sided local correspondence of solutions, proved for arbitrary C∞C^\inftyC∞ fields rather than for known solutions. It is the algebraic core of Hintz's separation of variables; nothing is asserted about the angular eigenvalue problem, the radial reduction, boundary behaviour or mode stability.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
