Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real normed space and F:E→EF:E\to EF:E→E continuously differentiable. Assume that Algorithm MR does not break down, producing iterates xkx_kxk, initial levels ηˉk\bar\eta_kηˉk, curves σk\sigma_kσk and final levels ηk\eta_kηk. Let x∗x_*x∗ be a limit point of (xk)(x_k)(xk) for which there is a constant Γ\GammaΓ, independent of kkk, such that

∥σk(η)∥≤Γ(1−η)∥F(xk)∥,ηˉk≤η≤1,(5.6)\|\sigma_k(\eta)\|\le\Gamma(1-\eta)\|F(x_k)\|,\qquad\bar\eta_k\le\eta\le1, \tag{5.6}∥σk(η)∥≤Γ(1−η)∥F(xk)∥,ηˉk≤η≤1,(5.6)

holds whenever xkx_kxk is sufficiently near x∗x_*x∗. Then F(x∗)=0F(x_*)=0F(x∗)=0 and xk→x∗x_k\to x_*xk→x∗. Furthermore, ηk=ηˉk\eta_k=\bar\eta_kηk=ηˉk for all sufficiently large kkk: eventually the initial level is accepted without backtracking.

No invertibility of F′(x∗)F'(x_*)F′(x∗) is assumed. Combined with an estimate of the form (5.6) near a point where F′F'F′ is invertible, the theorem yields the convergence of the backtracking methods of §6.

Formalization Note The paper says "sufficiently near"; we state: there exist Γ∈R\Gamma\in\mathbb RΓ∈R and δ>0\delta>0δ>0 such that (5.6) holds for every kkk with ∥xk−x∗∥<δ\|x_k-x_*\|<\delta∥xk−x∗∥<δ. Unlike (3.2), the paper does not add "for kkk sufficiently large" here, and neither does the statement. "For all sufficiently large kkk" in the conclusion is the atTop filter.

/-- Eisenstat–Walker (1994), p. 408, Theorem 5.2 for Algorithm MR: assume Algorithm MR does not break
down. If `x_*` is a limit point of `{x_k}` such that there is a `Γ` independent of `k` for which
(5.6) `‖σ_k(η)‖ ≤ Γ (1 - η) ‖F(x_k)‖`, `η̄_k ≤ η ≤ 1`, holds whenever `x_k` is sufficiently near
`x_*`, then `F(x_*) = 0` and `x_k → x_*`; furthermore `η_k = η̄_k` for all sufficiently large `k`.
"Sufficiently near" is `∃ δ > 0`, after `∃ Γ`; no invertibility of `F'(x_*)` is assumed. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
