Consider problem (P)(\mathrm P)(P): f∗=min⁡x∈Xf(x)f^*=\min_{x\in X}f(x)f∗=minx∈Xf(x), where X⊆RnX\subseteq\mathbb R^nX⊆Rn is closed and convex, f:Rn→Rf:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Rf:Rn→R is convex on XXX and differentiable at every point of XXX with gradient Lipschitz on XXX with constant Lf>0L_f>0Lf>0,

∥∇f(x)−∇f(y)∥≤Lf∥x−y∥for all x,y∈X,\|\nabla f(x)-\nabla f(y)\|\le L_f\|x-y\|\qquad\text{for all } x,y\in X ,∥∇f(x)−∇f(y)∥≤Lf∥x−y∥for all x,y∈X,

and the optimal set X∗X^*X∗ is nonempty, with x∗∈X∗x^*\in X^*x∗∈X∗ and f∗=f(x∗)f^*=f(x^*)f∗=f(x∗). Assume fff has quadratic functional growth with constant κf>0\kappa_f>0κf>0: for every x∈Xx\in Xx∈X and every nearest point xˉ=[x]X∗\bar x=[x]_{X^*}xˉ=[x]X∗, f(x)−f∗≥κf2∥x−xˉ∥2f(x)-f^*\ge\frac{\kappa_f}2\|x-\bar x\|^2f(x)−f∗≥2κf∥x−xˉ∥2. Together these say fff belongs to the class FLf,κf(X)\mathcal F_{L_f,\kappa_f}(X)FLf,κf(X).

Let β,L,Lˉf>0\beta,L,\bar L_f>0β,L,Lˉf>0 and let (xk)(x^k)(xk), (ek)(e^k)(ek), (αk)(\alpha_k)(αk) be a run of the feasible descent method (FDM): x0∈Xx^0\in Xx0∈X and, for every k≥0k\ge0k≥0,

xk+1=[xk−αk∇f(xk)+ek]X,∥ek∥≤β∥xk+1−xk∥,f(xk+1)≤f(xk)−L2∥xk+1−xk∥2,αk≥Lˉf−1.x^{k+1}=\big[x^k-\alpha_k\nabla f(x^k)+e^k\big]_X,\quad \|e^k\|\le\beta\|x^{k+1}-x^k\|,\quad f(x^{k+1})\le f(x^k)-\frac L2\|x^{k+1}-x^k\|^2,\quad \alpha_k\ge\bar L_f^{-1}.xk+1=[xk−αk∇f(xk)+ek]X,∥ek∥≤β∥xk+1−xk∥,f(xk+1)≤f(xk)−2L∥xk+1−xk∥2,αk≥Lˉf−1.

Then for every k≥0k\ge0k≥0

f(xk)−f∗ ≤ (11+Lκf4(Lf+Lˉf+βLˉf)2)k(f(x0)−f∗).(64)f(x^k)-f^*\ \le\ \left(\frac{1}{1+\dfrac{L\kappa_f}{4(L_f+\bar L_f+\beta\bar L_f)^2}}\right)^{k}\big(f(x^0)-f^*\big). \tag{64}f(xk)−f∗ ≤ 1+4(Lf+Lˉf+βLˉf)2Lκf1k(f(x0)−f∗).(64)

The theorem shows that the whole family of feasible descent methods, which includes proximal point, coordinate descent, extragradient and matrix splitting methods, converges linearly in function values under quadratic functional growth, without strong convexity and without assuming an error bound.

Formalization Note Rn\mathbb R^nRn is EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin n); fff is defined on all of Rn\mathbb R^nRn and only its values and gradients at points of XXX matter. The projection is the predicate IsNearest, so a run is any pair of sequences satisfying the conditions, and the errors eke^kek are quantified together with the iterates. "Simple" (cheap projection) and "closed" for fff are dropped: the first is not a mathematical condition and the second follows from continuity on XXX. No upper bound on αk\alpha_kαk is assumed, as on the page.
