Assume Assumptions 1–2 (with the mission's standing pins). Fix d′≥0d' \ge 0d′≥0 and a cap A‾>0\overline{A} > 0A>0. For x,y>0x, y > 0x,y>0 and d≥0d \ge 0d≥0 let

U(x,y,d):=max⁡(Ax,Ay)∈R2  x⋅u ⁣(Axx,d)+y⋅u ⁣(Ayy,d′)−C(Ax+Ay)s.t. Ax,Ay≥0, Ax+Ay≤A‾.(A.3)U(x,y,d) := \max_{(A_x,A_y)\in\mathbb{R}^2} \; x\cdot u\!\left(\frac{A_x}{x}, d\right) + y\cdot u\!\left(\frac{A_y}{y}, d'\right) - C(A_x + A_y) \quad \text{s.t. } A_x, A_y \ge 0,\ A_x + A_y \le \overline{A}. \qquad (A.3)U(x,y,d):=(Ax,Ay)∈R2maxx⋅u(xAx,d)+y⋅u(yAy,d′)−C(Ax+Ay)s.t. Ax,Ay≥0, Ax+Ay≤A.(A.3)

Then U2(x,y,d)=∂U/∂yU_2(x,y,d) = \partial U/\partial yU2(x,y,d)=∂U/∂y is decreasing in ddd, in integrated form: for every x>0x > 0x>0 and 0<y1<y20 < y_1 < y_20<y1<y2, the map

d⟼U(x,y2,d)−U(x,y1,d)d \longmapsto U(x,y_2,d) - U(x,y_1,d)d⟼U(x,y2,d)−U(x,y1,d)

is (weakly) decreasing on [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞).

In the proof of Proposition 2, x=1x = 1x=1 is a deviating platform with addictiveness ddd and yyy counts the other platforms at d′d'd′: lowering ddd makes joining further platforms more attractive.

Formalization Note. xxx and yyy are positive reals, since they divide. The derivative claim is stated as a decreasing difference because the paper does not establish differentiability of UUU. The maximizer of (A.3) is a parameter Astar assumed to solve (A.3) for every x,y>0x, y > 0x,y>0 and d≥0d \ge 0d≥0.

/-- Lemma B.3 (p. 29). Fix `d′ ≥ 0` and `Ā > 0`; let `(A_x*, A_y*)(x, y, d)` solve (A.3) and
`U(x, y, d)` be its value. Then `U₂(x, y, d)` is decreasing in `d`, stated in integrated form: for
`x > 0` and `0 < y₁ < y₂`, `U(x, y₂, d) − U(x, y₁, d)` is decreasing in `d ≥ 0`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
