Let F\mathcal FF be the faces of a manifold triangular mesh whose nodes are embedded by x1,…,xn\mathbf x_1,\dots,\mathbf x_nx1,…,xn in a Euclidean space, and let ℓuv=∥xu−xv∥\ell_{uv} = \|\mathbf x_u - \mathbf x_v\|ℓuv=∥xu−xv∥ be the induced metric. For every face (u,v,q)∈F(u,v,q) \in \mathcal F(u,v,q)∈F, every combination of its edges satisfies the triangle inequality:

ℓuv≤ℓuq+ℓvq,ℓuq≤ℓuv+ℓqv,ℓvq≤ℓvu+ℓqu.\ell_{uv} \le \ell_{uq} + \ell_{vq}, \qquad \ell_{uq} \le \ell_{uv} + \ell_{qv}, \qquad \ell_{vq} \le \ell_{vu} + \ell_{qu}.ℓuv≤ℓuq+ℓvq,ℓuq≤ℓuv+ℓqv,ℓvq≤ℓvu+ℓqu.

This is what makes ℓ\ellℓ a metric on the mesh, so that a property expressed solely in terms of ℓ\ellℓ is called intrinsic.
