The -th powers form an open subgroup of the semilocal units
ProvedLeopoldt.isOpen_powMonoidHom_rangeleopoldtnumber-theoryp-adic
Let be a number field, a prime, and let
be the group of semilocal units at (the product of the unit groups of the completed rings of integers at the primes of above ), with the product topology. Then for every the subgroup
of -th powers is open in .
Equivalently, contains a neighbourhood of . Concretely, if denotes the absolute value of in , every with is a -th power of a unit (Hensel/Newton approximation, or the -adic logarithm and exponential). This is the basic fact making an open (hence closed) subgroup, so that the intersection of §1.1 of the source is closed.
