For u ∉ Q̄ and coprime p, q ∈ Q̄[X]: if Q̄ + Q̄u + Q̄u⁻¹ + Σ Q̄ c (p(u)/q(u))ᵏ (k ≤ 3) is five-dimensional, then max(deg p, deg q) ≤ 2

Let u∈C∖Q‾u \in \mathbb{C} \setminus \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u∈C∖Q, let p,q∈Q‾[X]p, q \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}[X]p,q∈Q[X] be coprime, h=p(u)/q(u)h = p(u)/q(u)h=p(u)/q(u), let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C}c∈C be non-zero, and let WWW be the Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q-span of 1,u,u−11, u, u^{-1}1,u,u−1 and c,ch,ch2,ch3c, ch, ch^2, ch^3c,ch,ch2,ch3. Suppose dim⁡W=5\dim W = 5dimW=5. If max⁡(deg⁡p,deg⁡q)≥1\max(\deg p, \deg q) \geq 1max(degp,degq)≥1, then max⁡(deg⁡p,deg⁡q)≤2\max(\deg p, \deg q) \leq 2max(degp,degq)≤2.

So the ratio of a 444-term progression in such a space generates a subfield of index 111 or 222 of \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(u)(u)(u).

Proof. Evaluation at the transcendental uuu embeds Q‾(X)\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(X)Q(X) in C\mathbb{C}C; let f=p/qf = p/qf=p/q there, so f↦hf \mapsto hf↦h. By coprimality, max⁡(deg⁡p,deg⁡q)≤[Q‾(X):Q‾(f)]\max(\deg p, \deg q) \le [\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(X) : \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(f)]max(degp,degq)≤[Q(X):Q(f)] (Mathlib's RatFunc.finrank_eq_max_natDegree, from the Lüroth file). fff is not constant, so hhh is transcendental and c,ch,ch2,ch3c, ch, ch^2, ch^3c,ch,ch2,ch3 are free; with dim⁡(Q‾+Q‾u+Q‾u−1)=3\dim(\overline{\mathbb{Q}} + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u^{-1}) = 3dim(Q+Qu+Qu−1)=3 and dim⁡W=5\dim W = 5dimW=5, the intersection H∩PH \cap PH∩P of the two parts has dimension at least 222. Two non-proportional xi=cAi(h)x_i = cA_i(h)xi=cAi(h) in it have uxi=Ri(u)ux_i = R_i(u)uxi=Ri(u) with deg⁡Ri≤2\deg R_i \le 2degRi≤2; φ=R1/R2\varphi = R_1/R_2φ=R1/R2 is non-constant and maps to A1(h)/A2(h)A_1(h)/A_2(h)A1(h)/A2(h), so φ∈Q‾(f)\varphi \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(f)φ∈Q(f) and [Q‾(X):Q‾(f)][\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(X) : \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(f)][Q(X):Q(f)] divides [Q‾(X):Q‾(φ)]≤2[\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(X) : \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(\varphi)] \le 2[Q(X):Q(φ)]≤2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
