Let V⊆WV\subseteq WV⊆W with VVV nonempty, closed, and convex. On each of rounds 1,…,T1,\ldots,T1,…,T, let zt∈Wz_t\in Wzt∈W, choose any xt∈ΠV(zt)x_t\in\Pi_V(z_t)xt∈ΠV(zt), let gtg_tgt be a subgradient of ℓt\ell_tℓt at xtx_txt for comparison with points of VVV, and choose qt∈∂dV(zt)q_t\in\partial d_V(z_t)qt∈∂dV(zt). For each of the four surrogate losses ℓ~t(k)\widetilde\ell_t^{(k)}ℓt(k) listed in the theorem, and every u∈Vu\in Vu∈V,

Regret⁡T(u)=∑t=1T(ℓt(xt)−ℓt(u))≤∑t=1T(ℓ~t(k)(zt)−ℓ~t(k)(u)),k=1,2,3,4.\operatorname{Regret}_T(u)=\sum_{t=1}^{T}(\ell_t(x_t)-\ell_t(u))\le\sum_{t=1}^{T}\bigl(\widetilde\ell_t^{(k)}(z_t)-\widetilde\ell_t^{(k)}(u)\bigr),\qquad k=1,2,3,4.RegretT(u)=t=1∑T(ℓt(xt)−ℓt(u))≤t=1∑T(ℓt(k)(zt)−ℓt(k)(u)),k=1,2,3,4.

Thus any unconstrained learner's regret bound on one of these surrogate sequences transfers to its projected predictions on VVV.

Formalization Note The four choices are indexed 0,1,2,30,1,2,30,1,2,3 in Lean, in the book's order. The learner is represented by its arbitrary prediction sequence ztz_tzt; the inequality is pathwise. The loss subgradient condition is relative to VVV, and T≥1T\ge1T≥1 makes the book's one-based horizon explicit.

Retired 2026-10-27: a Lean-vs-paper fidelity audit found this statement weaker than, or narrower than, the cited result. A corrected statement will be resubmitted.
