A tree witness is a function θ(k,r)∈{0,1}\theta(k,r)\in\{0,1\}θ(k,r)∈{0,1} on the nodes (k,r)(k,r)(k,r), 0≤r<2k0\le r<2^k0≤r<2k, of the binary tree of residues. For distinct integers x,yx,yx,y with k=ν2(y−x)k=\nu_2(y-x)k=ν2(y−x), put x≺θyx\prec_\theta yx≺θy iff bitk(x)=θ(k, x mod 2k)\mathrm{bit}_k(x)=\theta(k,\,x\bmod 2^k)bitk(x)=θ(k,xmod2k). A finite word QQQ of integers is θ\thetaθ-safe if the sequence "the letters of QQQ in order, then all remaining integers in ≺θ\prec_\theta≺θ-order" contains no monotone 444-term arithmetic progression; QQQ is SAFE if it is θ\thetaθ-safe for some θ\thetaθ.

Theorem (reflection absorption for a one-grandchild block). Let a∈Za\in\mathbb Za∈Z, k≥0k\ge 0k≥0, and let B=(b1,…,bm)B=(b_1,\dots,b_m)B=(b1,…,bm) be a finite word such that a⋅Ba\cdot Ba⋅B is SAFE. Suppose that

  • ν2(b−a)=k\nu_2(b-a)=kν2(b−a)=k for every b∈Bb\in Bb∈B (so aaa and BBB lie in the same class mod 2k2^k2k but in opposite classes mod 2k+12^{k+1}2k+1),
  • all entries of BBB are congruent modulo 2k+22^{k+2}2k+2 (one grandchild), and
  • y≠ay\ne ay=a and y≡a(mod2k+1)y\equiv a \pmod{2^{k+1}}y≡a(mod2k+1).

Then the word

(a, b1,…,bm, 2y−b1,…,2y−bm, y)\bigl(a,\ b_1,\dots,b_m,\ 2y-b_1,\dots,2y-b_m,\ y\bigr)(a, b1,…,bm, 2y−b1,…,2y−bm, y)

is SAFE. Thus the target yyy is absorbed last, using exactly ∣B∣|B|∣B∣ auxiliary letters (the reflection of BBB about yyy, in the original order).

Formalization note: treeLt θ is from Definitions.Def_Erdos195_tree, and Safe is from Definitions.Def_Erdos195_defs. The hypotheses are stated with divisibility: 2k∣b−a2^k\mid b-a2k∣b−a and 2k+1∤b−a2^{k+1}\nmid b-a2k+1∤b−a; 2k+2∣b′−b2^{k+2}\mid b'-b2k+2∣b′−b; 2k+1∣y−a2^{k+1}\mid y-a2k+1∣y−a. a :: B ++ L parses as (a :: B) ++ L.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
