Let F=ℓ2(Nn,C)F=\ell^2(\mathbb{N}^n,\mathbb{C})F=ℓ2(Nn,C) be the nnn-mode Fock space and F⊗F≅ℓ2(Nn×Nn)F\otimes F\cong\ell^2(\mathbb{N}^n\times\mathbb{N}^n)F⊗F≅ℓ2(Nn×Nn) the two-port space. For η∈[0,1]\eta\in[0,1]η∈[0,1] let UηU_\etaUη be the passive beam-splitter unitary on F⊗FF\otimes FF⊗F (the same rotation with transmissivity η\etaη in every mode). Fix a state σ\sigmaσ on FFF and let Φσ\Phi_\sigmaΦσ be the channel ρ↦Tr⁡2[Uη(ρ⊗σ)Uη∗]\rho\mapsto\operatorname{Tr}_2\bigl[U_\eta(\rho\otimes\sigma)U_\eta^*\bigr]ρ↦Tr2[Uη(ρ⊗σ)Uη∗], with Kraus operators Ve,mx=⟨e∣2 Uη(x⊗σ∣m⟩)V_{e,m}x=\langle e|_2\,U_\eta(x\otimes\sqrt\sigma|m\rangle)Ve,mx=⟨e∣2Uη(x⊗σ∣m⟩), e,m∈Nne,m\in\mathbb{N}^ne,m∈Nn (the slice of the second port at number eee). Its Heisenberg dual is Φσ∗(Z)=∑e,mVe,m∗ZVe,m\Phi^*_\sigma(Z)=\sum_{e,m}V_{e,m}^*ZV_{e,m}Φσ∗(Z)=∑e,mVe,m∗ZVe,m.

Then for every bounded operator ZZZ on FFF and all x,x′∈Fx,x'\in Fx,x′∈F,

⟨x,Φσ∗(Z) x′⟩=∑m∈Nn⟨x⊗σ∣m⟩,  Uη∗(Z⊗Id)Uη (x′⊗σ∣m⟩)⟩;\langle x,\Phi_\sigma^*(Z)\,x'\rangle=\sum_{m\in\mathbb{N}^n}\Bigl\langle x\otimes\sqrt\sigma|m\rangle,\;U_\eta^*(Z\otimes\mathrm{Id})U_\eta\,\bigl(x'\otimes\sqrt\sigma|m\rangle\bigr)\Bigr\rangle ;⟨x,Φσ∗(Z)x′⟩=m∈Nn∑⟨x⊗σ∣m⟩,Uη∗(Z⊗Id)Uη(x′⊗σ∣m⟩)⟩;

that is, Φσ∗(Z)\Phi_\sigma^*(Z)Φσ∗(Z) is the partial expectation, over the second input in state σ\sigmaσ, of the conjugated observable Uη∗(Z⊗Id)UηU_\eta^*(Z\otimes\mathrm{Id})U_\etaUη∗(Z⊗Id)Uη.

This identifies the dual of the "first-input" beam-splitter channel with a conditional expectation of a unitarily rotated observable, which is the form in which conditional variances of beam-splitter outputs are compared with input variances.

Formalization Note In Lean the statement is the operator equality dual (firstKraus η hη σ) _ Z = conditionalLeft (rootColumn σ) _ (conjugate η hη Z), where rootColumn σ m =σ∣m⟩=\sqrt\sigma|m\rangle=σ∣m⟩, conjugate η hη Z =Uη∗(Z⊗Id)Uη=U_\eta^*(Z\otimes\mathrm{Id})U_\eta=Uη∗(Z⊗Id)Uη, and dual of a Kraus family is defined weakly by ⟨x,dual(Z)y⟩=∑i⟨Vix,ZViy⟩\langle x,\mathrm{dual}(Z)y\rangle=\sum_i\langle V_ix,ZV_iy\rangle⟨x,dual(Z)y⟩=∑i⟨Vix,ZViy⟩.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
