At an -safe cut of a -AP-free enumeration of , nothing before the earlier extreme has the extremes' -adic valuation
ProvedErdos195.extremes_val_neLet be a bijection with no monotone -term arithmetic progression, and fix a cut such that the prefix is -safe for some (i.e. the completion "prefix, then all remaining integers in the -adic order " has no monotone -AP; here iff the -th two's-complement digit of equals , ). Suppose positions carry the two extremes of the prefix (the minimum and the maximum, in either order), and let . Then no element placed before the earlier extreme has the same valuation against it: for every , (equivalently ).
Proof idea: the pairs and are both open at (their continuations , lie beyond the extremes, hence outside the prefix); by the digit-consistency criterion for open pairs, equal valuations would force the -th digits of and to agree, but they differ at . A necessary condition on every cut of a Ho-style chain with stage-dependent for Erdős Problem 195; it does not decide the problem.
