Let n>0n>0n>0 and let uuu be the uniform histogram with mass 1/n1/n1/n at each index. The extreme points of the coupling polytope U(u,u)U(u,u)U(u,u) are exactly the scaled permutation matrices:

Ext⁡(U(u,u))={Pσ:σ∈Perm⁡(n)}.\operatorname{Ext}(U(u,u))=\{P_\sigma:\sigma\in\operatorname{Perm}(n)\}.Ext(U(u,u))={Pσ:σ∈Perm(n)}.

This specializes Birkhoff's theorem to the normalization used for probability histograms in the matching proposition.

Formalization Note Mathlib's doubly stochastic matrices have row and column sums 111; the statement here uses the book's row and column sums 1/n1/n1/n.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
