Let n>1n > 1n>1 be odd with prime factorization n=∏i=1kpiαin = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{\alpha_i}n=∏i=1kpiαi, let xxx be a unit modulo nnn and let rir_iri be the order of x mod piαix \bmod p_i^{\alpha_i}xmodpiαi. Write ν2(m)\nu_2(m)ν2(m) for the exponent of the largest power of 222 dividing mmm. If the procedure does not yield a nontrivial factor of nnn at xxx — that is, rrr is odd or gcd⁡(xr/2−1,n)∈{1,n}\gcd(x^{r/2}-1, n) \in \{1, n\}gcd(xr/2−1,n)∈{1,n} — then

ν2(r1)=ν2(r2)=⋯=ν2(rk).\nu_2(r_1) = \nu_2(r_2) = \cdots = \nu_2(r_k).ν2(r1)=ν2(r2)=⋯=ν2(rk).

Contrapositively, whenever two of the local orders have different 2-adic valuations, xxx is a good choice. Combined with the estimate that the valuations all agree for at most a 1/2k−11/2^{k-1}1/2k−1 fraction of units, this gives the mission's goal.

Formalization Note Only the direction "failure implies agreement" is stated, which is the direction the page's "The algorithm only fails if all of these powers of 2 agree" asserts and the goal needs; the converse (also true for odd nnn) is the page's description of the two agreeing cases and is not part of this statement. Oddness of nnn is needed: modulo a power of 222, −1-1−1 and 111 can coincide.

/-- Shor (1997), §5, p. 1498: the algorithm only fails if the largest powers of 2 dividing the
local orders `r_i` all agree. For odd `n > 1` and a unit `x` for which the procedure does not
yield a nontrivial factor, the 2-adic valuations of `r_p` coincide for all prime factors `p`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
