The parameter choice. Let K1,K2,c′>0K_1,K_2,c'>0K1,K2,c′>0. There are constants c1,c2,C>0c_1,c_2,C>0c1,c2,C>0, depending only on K1K_1K1, K2K_2K2 and c′c'c′, such that for every q≥1q\ge1q≥1 and every integer N≥2N\ge2N≥2 with q≤exp⁡(c2log⁡N)q\le\exp(c_2\sqrt{\log N})q≤exp(c2logN) there is a height T0≥2T_0\ge2T0≥2 satisfying

K1(Nlog⁡2NT0+log⁡N)+K2(N 1−c′/log⁡(qT0)log⁡3(qT0)+Nlog⁡2(qT0)T0)  ≤  C Nexp⁡(−c1log⁡N).K_1\Bigl(\frac{N\log^{2}N}{T_0}+\log N\Bigr)+K_2\Bigl(N^{\,1-c'/\log(qT_0)}\log^{3}(qT_0)+\frac{N\log^{2}(qT_0)}{T_0}\Bigr)\;\le\;C\,N\exp\bigl(-c_1\sqrt{\log N}\bigr).K1(T0Nlog2N+logN)+K2(N1−c′/log(qT0)log3(qT0)+T0Nlog2(qT0))≤CNexp(−c1logN).

This is the calculus step of the argument, isolated from the complex analysis. Given the two error terms produced by the truncated Perron formula and by the contour shift, it exhibits a height at which their sum is small, and shows that the resulting saving over the trivial bound is exp⁡(−c1log⁡N)\exp(-c_1\sqrt{\log N})exp(−c1logN).

The choice is T0=exp⁡(log⁡N)T_0=\exp(\sqrt{\log N})T0=exp(logN). With it log⁡(qT0)≤(1+c2)log⁡N\log(qT_0)\le(1+c_2)\sqrt{\log N}log(qT0)≤(1+c2)logN, so the shifted abscissa gives

N 1−c′/log⁡(qT0)  ≤  Nexp⁡(−c′1+c2log⁡N),N^{\,1-c'/\log(qT_0)}\;\le\;N\exp\Bigl(-\frac{c'}{1+c_2}\sqrt{\log N}\Bigr),N1−c′/log(qT0)≤Nexp(−1+c2c′logN),

and the terms carrying 1/T01/T_01/T0 contribute Nlog⁡2N e−log⁡NN\log^{2}N\,e^{-\sqrt{\log N}}Nlog2Ne−logN; the polynomial factors log⁡3(qT0)\log^{3}(qT_0)log3(qT0) and log⁡2N\log^{2}Nlog2N are absorbed by shrinking c1c_1c1.

The hypothesis q≤exp⁡(c2log⁡N)q\le\exp(c_2\sqrt{\log N})q≤exp(c2logN) is exactly what prevents the modulus from eating the saving, and it is the reason the Siegel-Walfisz theorem is uniform only for moduli up to a fixed power of log⁡N\log NlogN.

No complex analysis enters: this is a statement about real functions of NNN and qqq.

Context. The theorem this lemma was introduced to decompose, Davenport.perron_of_region_bound, was proved independently — via the smoothed Perron route (Davenport.perron_smoothed_eq_integral and its siblings), which replaces the sharp cutoff by a smooth weight and so avoids the truncation error entirely. The statement here belongs to the classical sharp-cutoff route of Davenport Sections 17-18 and is left standing as a self-contained, reusable statement in its own right; it is not on the critical path of any current mission.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
