This is Kothari's upper bound on quantum exact learning in terms of the combinatorial parameter γ(C)\gamma(C)γ(C).

Let N=2nN=2^nN=2n and let C⊆{0,1}NC\subseteq\{0,1\}^NC⊆{0,1}N be a concept class with ∣C∣≥2|C|\ge 2∣C∣≥2, and let γ(C)\gamma(C)γ(C) be as in Definition 4.1. There is an absolute constant K>0K>0K>0 such that for every such CCC there is a quantum exact learner for CCC (input-independent unitaries interleaved with TTT queries to Oc:∣x,b⟩↦∣x,b⊕c(x)⟩O_c:|x,b\rangle\mapsto|x,b\oplus c(x)\rangleOc:∣x,b⟩↦∣x,b⊕c(x)⟩, outputting h=ch=ch=c with probability at least 2/32/32/3 for every target c∈Cc\in Cc∈C) with

T ≤ K1/γ(C)log⁡(1/γ(C)) log⁡∣C∣.T\ \le\ K\sqrt{\frac{1/\gamma(C)}{\log(1/\gamma(C))}}\ \log|C| .T ≤ Klog(1/γ(C))1/γ(C) log∣C∣.

It nearly matches the Ω(1/γ(C))\Omega(1/\sqrt{\gamma(C)})Ω(1/γ(C)) lower bound of Theorem 4.3 and resolved a conjecture of Hunziker et al.

Formalization Note Since ∣C∣≥2|C|\ge 2∣C∣≥2 forces 0<γ(C)≤1/20<\gamma(C)\le 1/20<γ(C)≤1/2, the logarithm log⁡(1/γ(C))≥log⁡2\log(1/\gamma(C))\ge\log 2log(1/γ(C))≥log2 is positive. The logarithm is natural; the base only changes KKK.

/-- **Theorem 4.8** (Kothari; survey p.12). For every concept class `C ⊆ {0,1}^N` (`N = 2^n`,
`|C| ≥ 2`, the domain of `γ`), there is a quantum exact learner for `C` using
`O(√((1/γ(C)) / log(1/γ(C))) · log |C|)` quantum membership queries. The constant `K` is absolute;
the learner is chosen after `C` but before the target concept. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Concepts, TTT-query quantum algorithms UT(O⊗I)⋯(O⊗I)U0∣s⟩U_T(O\otimes I)\cdots(O\otimes I)U_0|s\rangleUT(O⊗I)⋯(O⊗I)U0∣s⟩ with XOR oracle Oc:∣x,b⟩↦∣x,b⊕c(x)⟩O_c:|x,b\rangle\mapsto|x,b\oplus c(x)\rangleOc:∣x,b⟩↦∣x,b⊕c(x)⟩, output maps, and exact learning (for every c∈Cc\in Cc∈C, the computational-basis measurement yields a label mapped to ccc with probability ≥2/3\ge 2/3≥2/3) are as in the first entry. So is the parameter

γ(C)=min⁡C′⊆C, ∣C′∣≥2 max⁡i min⁡(γC′(i,0),γC′(i,1)),\gamma(C)=\min_{C'\subseteq C,\ |C'|\ge 2}\ \max_{i}\ \min\bigl(\gamma_{C'}(i,0),\gamma_{C'}(i,1)\bigr),γ(C)=C′⊆C, ∣C′∣≥2min imax min(γC′(i,0),γC′(i,1)),

where γC′(i,b)\gamma_{C'}(i,b)γC′(i,b) is the fraction of c∈C′c\in C'c∈C′ with c(i)=bc(i)=bc(i)=b.

Statement. There is a constant K>0K>0K>0 such that for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N (including n=0n=0n=0) and every concept class CCC on {0,1}n\{0,1\}^n{0,1}n with ∣C∣≥2|C|\ge 2∣C∣≥2, there exist:

  • a workspace size w∈Nw\in\mathbb Nw∈N and a query count T∈NT\in\mathbb NT∈N;
  • a TTT-query algorithm AAA with workspace {0,…,w−1}\{0,\dots,w-1\}{0,…,w−1};
  • an output map out\mathrm{out}out,

such that (A,out)(A,\mathrm{out})(A,out) exactly learns CCC and

T ≤ K1/γ(C)ln⁡(1/γ(C)) ln⁡∣C∣.T\ \le\ K\sqrt{\frac{1/\gamma(C)}{\ln\bigl(1/\gamma(C)\bigr)}}\ \ln|C| .T ≤ Kln(1/γ(C))1/γ(C) ln∣C∣.

Here ln⁡\lnln is the natural logarithm, and divisions by zero, if any arose, would evaluate to 000.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
