Let E\mathcal EE be a finite-dimensional real inner product space, g:E→(−∞,+∞]g:\mathcal E\to(-\infty,+\infty]g:E→(−∞,+∞] and F:dom⁡g→EF:\operatorname{dom} g\to\mathcal EF:domg→E, and assume:

  1. (C1) the solution set SSS of the variational inequality ⟨F(z∗),z−z∗⟩+g(z)−g(z∗)≥0\langle F(z^*),z-z^*\rangle+g(z)-g(z^*)\ge0⟨F(z∗),z−z∗⟩+g(z)−g(z∗)≥0 for all z∈Ez\in\mathcal Ez∈E is nonempty;
  2. (C2) ggg is proper, convex and lower semicontinuous;
  3. (C3) FFF is monotone on dom⁡g\operatorname{dom} gdomg;
  4. FFF is locally Lipschitz continuous, in the form: Lipschitz on every bounded subset of dom⁡g\operatorname{dom} gdomg.

Let (zk)(z^k)(zk), (zˉk)(\bar z^k)(zˉk) be generated by Algorithm 1 (the Explicit Golden Ratio Algorithm) with any ϕ∈(1,φ]\phi\in(1,\varphi]ϕ∈(1,φ], λˉ>0\bar\lambda>0λˉ>0, λ0>0\lambda_0>0λ0>0 and any starting points z0,z1z^0,z^1z0,z1. Then there is z∗∈Sz^*\in Sz∗∈S with

zk→z∗andzˉk→z∗(k→∞).z^k\to z^* \quad\text{and}\quad \bar z^k\to z^*\qquad (k\to\infty).zk→z∗andzˉk→z∗(k→∞).

The theorem shows that a method with fully explicit, adaptive stepsizes — no linesearch and no knowledge of a Lipschitz constant — solves monotone variational inequalities with a merely locally Lipschitz operator.

Formalization Note The paper's "locally Lipschitz" is formalized as Lipschitz continuity on every bounded subset of dom⁡g\operatorname{dom} gdomg, the property its proof (via Lemma 2) uses; the two agree when dom⁡g\operatorname{dom} gdomg is closed and the formal hypothesis is stronger otherwise. FFF is a total map whose values off dom⁡g\operatorname{dom} gdomg are never used.

Retired 2026-10-27: a Lean-vs-paper fidelity audit found this statement weaker than, or narrower than, the cited result. A corrected statement will be resubmitted.

/-- Theorem 2 of Malitsky (p. 6): suppose that `F` is locally Lipschitz continuous (here: Lipschitz
on every bounded subset of `dom g`) and conditions (C1)–(C3) hold. Then the sequences `(z^k)` and
`(z̄^k)` generated by Algorithm 1 (EGRAAL) converge to a common solution of the variational
inequality (1). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
