For the standard-form linear program

maximize ζ=∑j=1ncjxjsubject to∑j=1naijxj≤bi (i=1,…,m),xj≥0 (j=1,…,n),\text{maximize } \zeta = \sum_{j=1}^n c_j x_j \quad\text{subject to}\quad \sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij}x_j \le b_i\ (i = 1,\dots,m),\qquad x_j \ge 0\ (j = 1,\dots,n),maximize ζ=j=1∑ncjxjsubject toj=1∑naijxj≤bi (i=1,…,m),xj≥0 (j=1,…,n),

a solution is any x∈Rnx \in \mathbb{R}^nx∈Rn. It is feasible if it satisfies all the constraints, and optimal if in addition it attains the maximum of ζ\zetaζ over all feasible solutions. The problem is infeasible if it has no feasible solution, and unbounded if it has feasible solutions with arbitrarily large objective values: for every MMM there is a feasible xxx with ∑jcjxj>M\sum_j c_jx_j > M∑jcjxj>M.

A solution xxx is basic if the vector (x1,…,xn,w1,…,wm)(x_1,\dots,x_n,w_1,\dots,w_m)(x1,…,xn,w1,…,wm) with slacks wi=bi−∑jaijxjw_i = b_i - \sum_j a_{ij}x_jwi=bi−∑jaijxj is the basic solution of some dictionary (the solution obtained by setting its nonbasic variables to zero). A basic feasible solution is a feasible basic solution, and a basic optimal solution is an optimal basic solution.

These notions are the vocabulary of the fundamental theorem of linear programming.

Formalization Note "Basic" is defined through the dictionary structure of this mission, whose basic set carries mmm linearly independent columns of [A I][A\ I][A I]; it is not a support condition.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
