Let q∈Δnq\in\Delta_nq∈Δn with q(j)>0q(j)>0q(j)>0 for all jjj, let β>0\beta>0β>0, v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn and λ>0\lambda>0λ>0. Consider the two-variable dual objective

d(λ,μ)=μ+βλ+λ∑jq(j)exp⁡(v(j)−μλ−1),μ∈R,d(\lambda,\mu)=\mu+\beta\lambda+\lambda\sum_j q(j)\exp\Big(\frac{v(j)-\mu}{\lambda}-1\Big),\qquad \mu\in\mathbb R,d(λ,μ)=μ+βλ+λj∑q(j)exp(λv(j)−μ−1),μ∈R,

and put μ∗=λlog⁡(∑jq(j)exp⁡(v(j)/λ))−λ\mu^*=\lambda\log\big(\sum_j q(j)\exp(v(j)/\lambda)\big)-\lambdaμ∗=λlog(∑jq(j)exp(v(j)/λ))−λ. Then

  1. μ∗\mu^*μ∗ satisfies the optimality condition ∑jq(j)exp⁡(v(j)−μ∗λ−1)=1\sum_j q(j)\exp\big(\frac{v(j)-\mu^*}{\lambda}-1\big)=1∑jq(j)exp(λv(j)−μ∗−1)=1;
  2. d(λ,μ∗)=σ(λ)d(\lambda,\mu^*)=\sigma(\lambda)d(λ,μ∗)=σ(λ), where σ(λ)=λlog⁡(∑jq(j)ev(j)/λ)+βλ\sigma(\lambda)=\lambda\log\big(\sum_j q(j)e^{v(j)/\lambda}\big)+\beta\lambdaσ(λ)=λlog(∑jq(j)ev(j)/λ)+βλ is the function (47);
  3. σ(λ)\sigma(\lambda)σ(λ) is the minimum of d(λ,⋅)d(\lambda,\cdot)d(λ,⋅) over μ∈R\mu\in\mathbb Rμ∈R:
min⁡μ∈Rd(λ,μ)=σ(λ).\min_{\mu\in\mathbb R} d(\lambda,\mu)=\sigma(\lambda).μ∈Rmind(λ,μ)=σ(λ).

This reduces the two-variable dual min⁡λ>0,μd(λ,μ)\min_{\lambda>0,\mu} d(\lambda,\mu)minλ>0,μd(λ,μ) of the inner problem to the one-dimensional problem min⁡λ>0σ(λ)\min_{\lambda>0}\sigma(\lambda)minλ>0σ(λ).

Formalization Note The minimum over μ\muμ is stated with IsLeast on the range of μ↦d(λ,μ)\mu\mapsto d(\lambda,\mu)μ↦d(λ,μ), so it is both a lower bound and attained.

/-- Elimination of `μ` in the dual of §6.2 (Nilim–El Ghaoui 2005, p. 791). For `q ∈ Δₙ` with
`q > 0`, `β > 0` and `λ > 0`, put `μ* = λ log (∑ⱼ q(j) exp (v(j)/λ)) − λ`. Then `μ*` satisfies
the optimality condition `∑ⱼ q(j) exp ((v(j) − μ*)/λ − 1) = 1`, and the minimum over `μ ∈ ℝ` of the
two-variable dual objective `d(λ, μ) = μ + βλ + λ ∑ⱼ q(j) exp ((v(j) − μ)/λ − 1)` equals `σ(λ)` of
(47) and is attained at `μ*`. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, let q,v∈Rnq, v \in \mathbb{R}^nq,v∈Rn and let β,λ∈R\beta, \lambda \in \mathbb{R}β,λ∈R. Assume:

  • qqq lies in the probability simplex (qj≥0q_j \ge 0qj≥0, ∑jqj=1\sum_j q_j = 1∑jqj=1);
  • qj>0q_j > 0qj>0 for every jjj;
  • β>0\beta > 0β>0;
  • λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0.

Notation.

  • S=∑iqievi/λS = \sum_i q_i e^{v_i/\lambda}S=∑iqievi/λ, which is strictly positive.
  • μ∗=λlog⁡S−λ\mu^{*} = \lambda \log S - \lambdaμ∗=λlogS−λ.
  • The two-variable objective is
d(λ,μ)=μ+βλ+λ∑jqjexp⁡ ⁣(vj−μλ−1).d(\lambda,\mu) = \mu + \beta\lambda + \lambda \sum_j q_j \exp\!\Big(\frac{v_j-\mu}{\lambda} - 1\Big).d(λ,μ)=μ+βλ+λj∑qjexp(λvj−μ−1).
  • The dual function is σ(λ)=λlog⁡S+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = \lambda \log S + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=λlogS+βλ.

Conclusion. Three facts hold:

  1. The optimality equation holds at μ∗\mu^{*}μ∗:
∑jqjexp⁡ ⁣(vj−μ∗λ−1)=1.\sum_j q_j \exp\!\Big(\frac{v_j - \mu^{*}}{\lambda} - 1\Big) = 1 .j∑qjexp(λvj−μ∗−1)=1.
  1. The objective at μ∗\mu^{*}μ∗ equals the dual function: d(λ,μ∗)=σ(λ)d(\lambda,\mu^{*}) = \sigma(\lambda)d(λ,μ∗)=σ(λ).
  2. σ(λ)\sigma(\lambda)σ(λ) is the least element of {d(λ,μ):μ∈R}\{d(\lambda,\mu) : \mu \in \mathbb{R}\}{d(λ,μ):μ∈R}. That is:
    • d(λ,μ)≥σ(λ)d(\lambda,\mu) \ge \sigma(\lambda)d(λ,μ)≥σ(λ) for every real μ\muμ;
    • some real μ\muμ achieves d(λ,μ)=σ(λ)d(\lambda,\mu) = \sigma(\lambda)d(λ,μ)=σ(λ). By item 2, μ∗\mu^{*}μ∗ is one such value.

Uniqueness of the minimiser is not asserted.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n = 0n=0: excluded by the simplex hypothesis.
  • n=1n = 1n=1:
    • q=(1)q = (1)q=(1), S=ev1/λS = e^{v_1/\lambda}S=ev1/λ and μ∗=v1−λ\mu^{*} = v_1 - \lambdaμ∗=v1−λ.
    • The claims reduce to e0=1e^{0} = 1e0=1 and to min⁡μd(λ,μ)=v1+βλ\min_\mu d(\lambda,\mu) = v_1 + \beta\lambdaminμd(λ,μ)=v1+βλ.
  • β\betaβ: it enters only as the additive constant βλ\beta\lambdaβλ on both sides. Its positivity is assumed but plays no visible role in the equations.
  • λ≤0\lambda \le 0λ≤0: not covered.
