Let's say the set is S1=[a,b,c,d]S_{1}=[a,b,c,d]S1=[a,b,c,d] let m=a+b+c+d4m=\frac{a+b+c+d}{4}m=4a+b+c+d. From the information given, the standard deviation is the average of the differences between the elements of the set and mmm. Something like D1=14(∣a−m∣+∣b−m∣+∣c−m∣+∣d−m∣)D_{1}=\frac{1}{4}(|a-m|+|b-m|+|c-m|+|d-m|)D1=41(∣a−m∣+∣b−m∣+∣c−m∣+∣d−m∣) and that equals 6. Now, the new set should be S2=[a+3,b+3,c+3,d+3]S_{2}=[a+3,b+3,c+3,d+3]S2=[a+3,b+3,c+3,d+3] let n=a+3+b+3+c+3+d+34=m+3n=\frac{a+3+b+3+c+3+d+3}{4}=m+3n=4a+3+b+3+c+3+d+3=m+3. D2=14(∣a+3−(m+3)∣+∣b+3−(m−3)∣+∣c+3−(m+3)∣+∣d+3−(m+3)∣)D_{2}=\frac{1}{4}(|a+3-(m+3)|+|b+3-(m-3)|+|c+3-(m+3)|+|d+3-(m+3)|)D2=41(∣a+3−(m+3)∣+∣b+3−(m−3)∣+∣c+3−(m+3)∣+∣d+3−(m+3)∣). This should hold no matter how many elements the sets contain. We can see that the 3s3s3s cancel out so that D1=D2=6D_{1}=D_{2}=6D1=D2=6.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
